natural disaster

It rained last night. A lot. The result is between 3 and 4 inches of water in our basement. This is much, much worse than the accidental basement flood that happened before - but at least this time there’s almost nothing of value in the basement since we moved the TV, got rid of the old carpet, etc.

Around 5am or so we were awakened by loud cracks of thunder as a big storm raged outside - and between the claps of thunder we could hear Daboo crying in fear. We figured she was just afraid of the storm and ignored her for awhile but eventually it got annoying and Melody went down to investigate. It soon became apparent why the dog was crying - she was getting flooded out! We took her upstairs and dried her off and while we were sitting in the office half-asleep and lamenting over the sorry state of the basement, we heard a cracking/wet sound come from the ceiling and low and behold right in front of our eyes a leak appeared. Great.

I have a fear that our house is quickly turning into a curse and I don’t know what to do about it. The kitchen ceiling is currently removed because the plumber needs to get access to the leaking pipes which were under there. The basement has shown remarkable swimming-pool-like traits multiple times. And now there’s yet another leak appearing in the office ceiling that probably means the roof has problems. We haven’t even lived here three months!

It is hard for me to believe that all these problems are presenting themselves just now. We’ve have the garage fill with water every time there’s been rain and now the entire basement flooded just because we got a heavy storm. Heavy storms happen pretty frequently - usually once or twice a year. How could this have not happened before? The water got inside by flooding a drain which is jointly connected to the garage and the basement. That drain was carpeted over until we pulled that up after the last string of disasters. There’s just no way this hasn’t happened before. I just can’t believe it.

So what to do?

Fix it up and buy a new one….

Ouch. Did you guys have the home inspection? I wish we would have, but I was afraid we’d lose the house. Biggest life lesson yet learned here.

@Mel: Yeah we did.. and he claimed the sump was working and everything was fine, etc. I’m starting to doubt it. The plumber also found some stuff in the bathroom that he should have noticed, too. Makes me think the inspector didn’t do much.

Wow…with so much you’ve come across in the past 3 months, you should hold the inspector responsible. Granted, they can’t catch everything, but c’mon!!
