Day 1: Magic

Magic is a social implementation of the classic Magic Eight Ball. Ask a question and turn over the eight ball to reveal your fate! If you don’t like the answer, you can enter your own. Your answer is then transmitted to other people running Magic and offered up as a possible answer to their own questions. Magic is continuously downloading new answers to your questions - answers that have been entered in by people all over the world. As long as it is running, it is evolving. Have fun!

Hm…. you say i’d have to turn over the eight ball. That made me wonder how to do it to get a result.

I tried to touch-drag the ball expecting it to rotate and nothing happened.
Then i thought turning over the whole device would reveal an answer. Nope.
I even held the device above my head to see if an answer appearsn when the iPhones screen is facing down.

Then i shook the iPhone and i saw an answer and finally i found out that by rotating the iPhone 180 degrees it will unveil your magic answer.

Nice gadget! I’ll try to create custom answers.

@Magician: lol - I’m glad you worked it out! I decided I didn’t want to come right out and say directly how to do it, so I gave a hint instead. It’s more fun to let everyone figure it out. :-)

  3. Todd Says:

My favorite thing so far is to check and see the questions people are typing in to the submission box instead of answers. This has the potential to be fun :-)

  4. ben Says:

it looks good although i was confused how it worked at first, i thought i had to shake it wildly.

  5. GameJim Says:

    Its not working for me

  6. Mario Says:

I had no problems figuring out how it works :)
Great app..I always wanted to have one of those :)

Do you think that implementing shaking instead of turning device upside down would be more difficult?

P.S. My country’s flag (Serbia) is missing :)

It’s replying to me with responses which make no sense.

“rid”, “49″ and other random gibberish.

  10. Maraklov Says:

“Contrary to popular belief, it is not necessary to shake or jostle the ball before turning it, as doing so can create air bubbles that may visually distort the answer.” - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_8-Ball

i just like to shake it, is that so wrong?

    very good start, sean.

  11. Sean Says:

hehe - I didn’t do shaking because the idea of turning it upside down occurred to me and it was more interesting at the time and seemed easier to implement.

As to why there’s gibberish answers sometimes - well, that’s because people are putting in gibberish entries into the system. Simple as that. :-) Chaos is part of the nature of the internet and seems unstoppable.

  12. Alex Says:

Buen comienzo Sean. Solo faltan 29 :D
    Buena Suerte. ;)

hi there, fun apps…i’ve also looked at the source of pumpkin…trying to learn how to code for the iphone…will you be releasing the sources of your other apps as well? anyway, now i have a reason to check installer everyday…

  16. Mario Says:

Sean, is there any way to moderate the repository of answers? I’m quite willing to suggest more improvements for Magic 8 and keep repository clean so that the users have more fun using this app.

I guess your schedule is full til the end of Nov, but if you’re interested I can help you out with this app :)
