Day 5: Pumped
And now for something completely different…
Today’s app is a fuel tracker. You can input the price per gallon of gas, how many gallons you pumped, and what your odometer says at the time. Do that for awhile and you’ll develop a running total of gas used, average miles per gallon, and a few other stats. What? A potentially useful app? Yeah yeah.. I won’t let it happen again. Maybe. ![]()

While I haven’t had time to download it yet, today’s app sounds great. Thanks!
November 5th, 2007 at 8:30 am
OMG, How do you do it?? Keep up the good work!
Hey is there any way you can make an application that vibrates everytime you press a key while using the keypad only? Just a little vibration… Like a nudge…
November 5th, 2007 at 8:34 am
can’t seem to find this app in installer…
November 5th, 2007 at 8:35 am
@mario: it should be there - it’s been downloaded almost 400 (!) times already. maybe try refreshing the sources?
November 5th, 2007 at 8:37 am
@Al: It ain’t easy…
As to adding a vibration for the keyboard - I’m not really sure how I’d do that system-wide. I could probably make it work within a single app, but that’s probably not what you’re shooting for.
November 5th, 2007 at 8:49 am
quite useless in germany and without a car.
November 5th, 2007 at 8:51 am
@marcel: lol - maybe tomorrow I’ll somehow have the iPhone turn into a car… yeah.. that should be possible…
November 5th, 2007 at 8:55 am
okay, whatever, i love your apps.
November 5th, 2007 at 9:58 am
Are you going to update this app in a few months when the price of gas exceeds what it can handle???
Seriously though, this one is great! I used to have an application like this on my Palm device that I loved. Nice that I can now do this on my ipod!
November 5th, 2007 at 10:05 am
UH….we dont use gallons in europe…and te rest of thw world …
and since 40% of the iphones are unlocked and shipped
November 5th, 2007 at 10:06 am
and mb you can ad euros an pounds…
November 5th, 2007 at 10:48 am
Fuel measurement is a tricky one to localise, but if it’s possible to make it ‘work’ for places other than the US, then for the UK it would be:
Currency: £ (pounds)
Quantity: Litres
Economy: Miles per Galon.
Yes, thats right, we put fuel into the car in litres, pay for it in litres and then wonder how many miles we get per gallon. I know, it makes no sense but there it is.
Also, I think our Gallon is a different size to the US too, one gallon is 4.54609188 litres.
So, if the app could be tweaked to accommodate that, then I for one, and my wife for two, would be very thankful.
November 5th, 2007 at 11:25 am
and for the european part where they dont ride on the wrong side of the way:
Euro
litres
Km per Litres
THX!
November 5th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
i must say, it’s a great thing you are doing here,
very impressive if i say so myself,
keep up the good work man,
November 5th, 2007 at 12:31 pm
Now this is useful… It would be great if you added an option to choose between KM/Miles/Liters/Gallons.
November 5th, 2007 at 1:34 pm
Awesome app!
Thanks for it!
=D
November 5th, 2007 at 4:46 pm
this is a very useful app, but I’m in Canada and use liters and kilometers….. like everywhere else in the world except the USA… do you think it would be possible to update this with a settings menu to choose what measurements are used?
This is a terrific idea, and was excited when downloading it… but I just wont use it if I have to manually do these conversions before entering them in
November 5th, 2007 at 6:29 pm
I live in Mexico and also use Kilometers and Liters, please update the app its a very handy app
keep the good work
November 5th, 2007 at 6:40 pm
what you should do is make an app seperate from burp for the porn peddlers so they can do there own thing and the ppl who dont want to see it dont have to…. you can call it ….gasp!
November 5th, 2007 at 8:56 pm
thank
November 5th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Just wondering what happens if you skip a fill up? Does it completely skew your results , or does it ignore the outliers?
November 5th, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Ps Great job! very polished looking apps! I hate that my signature says IE 7.0 but firefox Sucks with my tablet, c’mon firefox
November 5th, 2007 at 9:33 pm
@scooter: if you skip an entry, it’ll get messed up, yeah
It’s pretty simple.
@everyone-in-the-rest-of-the-world: liters/gallons etc. could be added. either by me, eventually, or by someone else. (The source code is posted on google.)
November 6th, 2007 at 12:33 am
I agree with Xalcker for another contries, please add kilometers and liters. Thank You
November 6th, 2007 at 7:39 am
I wish you could come up with a way to copy/paste on the iphone. That would be grate (great).
November 6th, 2007 at 6:05 pm
Sean! It’s just me who can’t find the sources on your google code site?
November 6th, 2007 at 6:08 pm
@santa: http://iappaday.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/Pumped/
November 6th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
yeah! Dumb me!
thanx
November 7th, 2007 at 10:35 pm
Great job so far, Sean.
While most of the other apps have been fun toys, this is my favorite so far because it has an actual use.
To echo the other comments (even though I’m in the U.S.) it would be good to have a preferences menu where you can pick units to enter data and to view results.
Also, when entering price, here in the U.S. gas prices go to the thousandths place (i.e., $2.899 not $2.89 or $2.90) it would be helpful to add that functionality.
Finally, it would be great to have the ability to edit or delete a single record in the log.
Thanks again though. Great work!
November 14th, 2007 at 10:49 am
I also think that the ability to have metric on the phone would be gold as well. Can’t wait for someone to fix it!!
November 15th, 2007 at 10:58 am
where do i download the app
November 16th, 2007 at 4:31 am
installer aka apptapp
November 19th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
I love the idea of the Pumped app. I haven’t had a chance to fill up once yet, much less twice, so I don’t know the answer to this, but in the app there is a cost per mile. Does it use the price from the previous fillup, or the current fill up? It should use the price of the PREVIOUS fillup because it was the gas from THAT fill-up that affected the miles/gallon, not the gas in the current fill up. This can make for some pretty skewed results if you want to do some testing. Let’s say I fill up with regular, then premium, and then regular again. The price/mile for the regular will appear to be higher since when you fill up you are filling up with more expensive gas. And the price/mile for premium will appear to be lower since you are filling up with cheaper gas.
I should get better gas mileage with the premium, but maybe it won’t offset an additional 20 cents/gallon. Maybe it will, but the point is, it’s difficult to make these kinds of tests if your app uses the price of the CURRENT fill-up to calculate cost/mile. It’s still a cool app though. Thank you.
Oh, do you think you could add a way to look at the history, or edit the history? What if I make a mistake?
November 20th, 2007 at 6:52 pm
that wouldn´t be very diffucult jus to modify for euros - kilometers - meters… (the problem is i dunno how to programme…
November 23rd, 2007 at 7:30 am
awesome.
im a courier, and i drive over 400 miles a day.
(hence, the ability to afford an iphone hahah)
this app is perfect for me.
i plan on using this everyday, when i pump gas for my route.
really cool that i can see how many miles per gallon i get,
and how much i really am spending on gas these days..

I really love this app, but I hope you can update it to fix some problems.

This is a great one. I can see myself using this one quite a bit.
December 2nd, 2007 at 2:16 pm

December 3rd, 2007 at 5:08 am

Completely USELESS for anyone with a car larger than a Toyota Camry. Hello? Sean? My Suburban has a 42 gallon tank. Jeez, I’m sure half the cars in the US hold more than 20 gallons!
December 17th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
I was quite excited when I discovered this app, and on my very next trip to the filling station I broke out my iphone to put in the information that it craved… it was then that I discovered a minor, and I suspect easily fixable issue… It only goes to 20.0 Gallons, and sadly my truck required over 25 gallons (at $3.40 a gallon) that evening…. yes, I have a 26 gallon tank in my truck, and I frequently postpone filling the tank up as late as possible (as it is such a painful experience…)

Hey Sean,
A lotta ppl have been asking for the kmpl version of this app of yours. Even I wanted the same.
I aint a developer for the apps, but tried looking at the source you have put up and I have tried to tweak your code (Fr India users) to enable it for kmpl…
I dont know how to put that onto the installer now…
So lemme know your email, so that I can send you the files, and maybe you can load it up onto ur site!
Cheerio!!!

I love your apps they are pretty neat. I agree with a bunch of the other people who are left messages with re: using Kilometers and Liters.

Hi Sean, I think there is a problem with the calculation in this app. Surprised I didn’t notice it earlier. The first entry made will always not show any miles traveled as you basically are inputting the initial odometer reading. The next entry shows the updated odometer and cost entry. When entered, the mileage and cost result is incorrect, as the mile per gallon appears to be divided by the total number of gallons used (entry 1+2), when it should only be divided by the fuel used in the current entry (#2). Can you fix this? Would use the app alot if corrected. Thanks.

Sean,
Wanted to take the time to say thanks for some great apps. I was wondering if you could fix pumped to work with 1.1.3. It no longer works.
