Day 12: Scribble

Today’s app was quite a challenge to finish on time - I almost didn’t manage it before going to bed last night, and this morning I had to make some tweaks before it was ready. It’s not as advanced as I wanted it to be, but I simply ran out of time this time. In any case, it’s still a fun little drawing toy where you tilt to change direction of the line. Have fun!

    pretty cool. Thanks

Pretty creative! An Etch-a-Sketch controlled by gravity. :)

Apps that make use of the accelerometer are always intriguing.

I love this app lol I spent a good 5min scratching at the screen until I finally realized it was motion based.

  4. Sean Says:

    @aw: lol!

  5. kyle Says:

pretty neat but no use really, I’ll stick with my sketches.

  6. Borat Says:

First thing I do when i wake up is download your apps. This morning I downloaded Scribble and I also scratched the screen for a long time, I gave up on it.

  7. Alex Says:

really nice apps coming on here sean - any plans to tweak them when the month is over (i-app-a-year possibly - the iPhone really needs a good Word Processor!!!).

    Thanks.

I have to commend you on some really great (albeit basic) apps, especially the quest app. I’d love to see you develop it further - it has some serious potential. Have you considered at the completion of your 30 days, going back and working some more on some of these? I’d hate to see some of them abandoned.

This app isn’t really my cup of tea, but it’s still a blast to see what you come up with each day. My only gripe is that some of them are so well done that it makes the others look bad. Sort of an anti-climax, you know? ;)

Can’t wait to see what’s next.

  9. Sean Says:

@Borat: Did you ever try tilting the phone? Cuz that’s the secret…

  10. Sean Says:

@Alex: Well, I know some of the apps are useless and have no purpose whatsoever. Some are clearly worth expanding on. The problem is that assuming I manage to finish this, I’ll have 30+ apps… maybe 10 or 12 worth keeping… but even that’s a huge number. Most devs only maintain one or two apps at most. So I don’t know if I can do that. That’s part of the reason for my releasing all the code (yeah yeah.. I’ve been slacking on that front :)) - I’m hoping people will come out of the woodwork and support apps they find interesting and turn them into community projects.

  11. Sean Says:

@Eric: Thanks for the kindness. The whole anti-climatic thing is certainly an issue. It’s even an issue for me. The problem is, the “good” apps take a lot longer than one day to make. :) So the filler stuff has to be basic in order to make the time I need.

I’m getting concerned now, though, because the social apps are by far the most fun and are also the most time consuming - not only to build but to maintain the backend system! I have a constant fear of not only not being able to finish, but also ending up putting out crap apps for the entire rest of the month… Arg!

This is becoming much more stressful than I bargained for. :)

  12. JackieMac Says:

Hee, hee, I too spent a few minutes trying to draw using my finger. Until I finally realized you had to tilt the iPhone — lol! :-)

    Very clever little app!

And thanks for ALL the fun apps you’ve created!!!

i think ur doing a great job with iapp-a-day. I cant wait till the end of the month to have all 30 apps. After u get a little rest in December may i suggest that u combine a few of the aspects of ur apps together (like burp and graffiti) and release it for the holidays or new year as a nice present for all of us.

  14. SwEeTLiLGuRL Says:

@ JackieMac, yeah i pretty much did the same thing! :) I was like hmm..not very interesting..changed the colors a few times… until I had to answer my work phone and I had it in my hand not even realizing I was tipping it! I keep forgetting the phone reacts to angles..

Anywho Sean…IAppADay is the first app I look for everyday so obviously you piqued my interest!

  15. Dash-2 Says:

    Awesome app.

  16. APP IDEA Says:

Hey sean, I was wondering if you appreciate input for app ideas. I would really like to see a good beat box app for the iphone. There seems to already be one out but it sucks and the samples are really soft. Do you think you could make one that has decent samples and could maybe make a scratching turntable noise when you spin a record. Or perhaps just all together make two turntables and be able to choose what song on your library to scratch and then post the mixes made on a network everyone can view. Let me know what you think.

  17. APP IDEA Says:

It would look maybe sorta like this:
    http://macapper.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/djay-recording.png

  18. Mario Says:

@APP IDEA did you paste that png together or is it a screen capture of some existing app you have running on you mac?

  19. APP IDeA Says:

@Mario its just a screen capture of an already existing application. its called djay

  20. Alex Says:

also (not that you don’t have enough on your plate already) - at the end can you make a nice simple launcher type app that simply contains all of your apps on one page (like a new spring board or calendar).

  21. HELP ME Says:

    Does this work?

  22. NerveGas Says:

    Hey
    I’ve been working on a
    Android port to the iPhone
Sean would you like to help me work on it?

  23. Sean Says:

@NerveGas: I haven’t read much of anything about Android.. been too busy. :( I’ve heard of Google having some kind of prize or something for developing for it? What’s that about?

  24. Dash-2 Says:

    @ Sean: Yeah… like $10 million =D

  25. Johannes Plunien Says:

It would be nice if you could commit your recent apps to your code.google.com repository too.
