Compatibility Research

I have a few quick questions for the iPod Touch owners out there (since I don’t have one to test on myself)…

1: When you try to start an app that uses the camera (such as Burp, Quest, Collage), does the app start and run fine? What happens when you try to use the camera in those apps? Do you get a blank screen? Does it crash? Something else?

2: Elmo and Panic both use the vibration feature of the iPhone. Do the apps still seem to work, generally, on the iPod Touch? For instance, when you tickle Elmo, he’s supposed to laugh and vibrate. Do you still hear the laugh, at least?

3: Whisper uses the iPhone microphone to record. I assume Whisper still runs for you? What happens when you try to record? Do you get any errors? Crashes? Or does it just act like it is recording and go about its business?

I’m trying to determine if using things like the camera or even having support for them as an option in any way adversely affects iPod Touch owners from using the rest of the app. Thanks!

I don’t have an iPod-Touch. I have an iPhone. But when I installed and used “Panik” I got very angry. My iPhone didn’t stop vibrating until I did a reboot.

@Jemand: lol - yeah.. turns out the way the vibration works is you turn it on and the code has to explicitly turn it off. It didn’t occur to me that the OS wouldn’t “clean up” when the app was exited while vibrating… The simple fix is to just cause the phone to vibrate again either with Panic, Elmo, or anything else and when that code goes to shut off the motor, the phone stops vibrating.

Obviously the Panic/Elmo apps should check for this case and try to shut the motor off as the app exits - but I didn’t think to even try that at the time…

    hey Sean,

I have a touch and have enjoyed the novelty of you apps :P

As for the ones with iPhone only features, the apps work exactly as they should, just without the vibrations and for the camera it just shows a black screen… if you try to take a pic it says something like, your hardware doesnt support this feature or nothing at all will happen.

    Keep up the great work!

All work just fine as Bliks said above,
with my iTouch (1.1.1 and 1.1.2)

Thanks again for thinking about us forgotten
    iTouch owners.

All itouch apps work perfectly, the non touch features just pretend to work. Basically, I confirm what everyone else says. I still like whisper, even if I can’t record.

Thanks guys! You’ve been most enlightening! :)

Yup, it all works on the iPod Touch, but it just isn’t possible to make pictures without a camera, record without a mic or vibrate without a vibrating engine ;) Have you seen the ripoff of your level? it’s in the installer now, called iLevel! lame! :)

First of all, thanks! Now your answer:

    1.- Runs fine (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mmoroca/1996644666/in/set-72157602725937060/).
2.- it doesnt vibrate as expected, everything else is ok…
3.- just act like it is recording.

Agree with other itouch owners. :)

It acts as if there is a camera, and the camera snap thing happens (it goes in to the middle and comes back out on a black screen)

They obviously don’t vibrate, although if you have headphones in, they will have sound, i thought elmo was just a picture to start with :D

It thinks it’s recording but it doesn’t, occasionally mine did crash but not a major crash. You can also listen to other peoples “whispers”

how do you get to the whisper feature on the iPhone? I’m looking for it but I can find it help me pleeeeeease!
