Day 19: Hockey

I think that this app is one of the more creative ones. It’s a two player air hockey game with pretty decent physics. Set the phone on a table, find another person with at least one finger, and have fun. :) I’d also like to note that the idea of hockey was on my list of apps since the beginning - but apparently it was such a compelling thought that I’ve had multiple emails requesting it - and then Krzysztof Jankowsi emailed me a complete set of graphics out of the blue! That’s when I knew I had to get to work on it…

This app was one of the more painful ones to finish and actually took several days. (Mostly on account of the physics… I suck at math, apparently.) I think it turned out pretty nicely, though, and was worth the effort. There’s no Digg link built into this one - but if you like it, head on over to Digg and vote up iApp-a-Day. Let’s get it to the front page! ;-)

@ Sean - omg hockey!? i love, love, love hockey! you so rock! i only have my daughter here and shes almost 12 mo, so i cant play right now. this is 2 cool though. u never cease 2 amaze me :-D. btw, did you receive the email i sent you? tc sean :-)

  2. Sean Says:

@$hl3y: Yes, I got your email and I’ve been thinking about something kind of like that. It’d be quite large, though, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to pull it off. We’ll see.

Finally something cool which actually works with all functionality on the iPod Touch, i love these apps only i think it’s too bad most of them rely on a function build in to iPhones only (camera for Collage, Burp etc. Mic for secrets etc.). Keep ‘m comming, i like this one :)

  4. Sean Says:

@D4V3: Question.. what does Burp/Quest/Whisper, etc actually do when run on the iPod Touch? Do they crash?

  5. Suzanne Says:

I play ur apps on my touch, they work fine. Just wish u could make it so u could upload pics from the library since touch doesn’t have a camera.

Anyways this app is horribly glitchy? I tried playing it with my bro.

  6. andy Says:

    awesome!
maybe you could make it so the “stick” rests in front of the point of contact, so you can see it.

I’m dreading the end of the month!

I want more games like a video poker or other. Do you have in mind develop some game?

    EXCELLENT YOUR WORK. Congrats.

  10. Frische Apps: Wasserwaage & Hockey-Game at iFUN.de/iPhone :: Alles zum iPhone Says:

Great application Sean, probably my favorite.

  12. dm Says:

Wow, not THAT is a fun app! Great work Sean! Runs very smooth. Used to be addicted to Air Hockey at the arcade when I was a kid.

  13. dm Says:

er, I meant to say *now* rather then *not*
    Still half awake. Anyhow…

  14. SwEeTLiLGuRL Says:

I love this APP! I’m kinda anxious to play it with someone, because all I have is myself right now, but it works like a charm! Not sure if you’re still looking for ideas, but since you do so well with the game apps, I have an idea…remember the game Plinko from the Price is Right…..?? :-)

  15. w84death Says:

    the game is perfect :)

but the graphics is lame :P:P:P

  16. Sean Says:

@w84death: lol - well I don’t know who could possibly be responsible for *that*… :P

  17. drunknbass Says:

how did you handle multitouch? Just mousedown and gestures?

  18. Sean Says:

@drunknbass: Yes, gestures. It’s a slight abuse of the purpose of gestures… but it seems to work reasonably well. :-) I’ll probably get to posting the source to google code sometime today or tomorrow, so you can take a look there and see the details if you’re interested.

Keep rockin’ Sean. I hope you saved the best for last. Also I can’t wait to see what apps you can come up with when you actually have a lot of time to make them.

  20. w84death Says:

@Sean: but honestly.. thanks You for taking my gfx and coding this nice app :)

  21. Mario Says:

  22. aw Says:

  23. Jin Says:

am I missing something cause nothing is movin 4 me? Every so often I randomly lose. Is this compatible with 1.1.1?

  24. iph0n3 Says:

The good stuff just keeps on coming… Keep it up… If ur lost for ideas, think addictive minigames

  25. Jord Says:

I have to second the “plinko” app idea that would be fun

  26. Strip Says:

    pinko!!

  27. Anonymous Says:

does not work at all…keeps saying have two fingers on the screen and I do…

  28. Strip Says:

ur never going to get hockey work with an attitude like that. Think go

  29. lulZ Says:

hey sean i love your apps. are you going to keep developing after november or update the good apps? also see my post in levels.

  30. Omar Says:

plz let it that we can play it over wifi it would be better a lot :D
if its hard make it like graffiti or something that we can play against anyone in the world :D

  31. Omar Says:

Always says “keep two fingers on the screen” therefore i can not play….can someone help me….does this work with all iphone firmwares?

  32. jord Says:

put your fingers near the two goals to start it

  33. HanHookie Says:

I love this app! Its probably the most fun app available. Its kind of counterintuitive at the beginning when youre gaining control of the pucks. I figured we’d just touch the pucks at the same time to start. But like Jord said earlier, you have to place your hands anywhere BUT on the two pucks to gain control of them…then you start. Oh yea, sometimes the pucks and the ball thingy spaaaaaaz out all over the place like its in fast forward….this happen to anyone else?

Thanks man, this one is ace

  34. spiorf Says:

This game is amazing! it only miss calibration, also an offset saved in a text file would be enough, instead of being hardcoded.
