Day 21: Mixup
Today I bring you yet another game. This one presents you with a mixed up english word and you have to drag the letters back into their proper spot. It’s oddly fun! After getting it working, I found myself just sitting there playing it for quite awhile.
Have fun!

Hi Sean,
First of all THANK YOU for bringing us apps for our beloved iPhones/Touches
Secondly, congratulations for succeeding in programming one app a day!
Thirdly, I have a suggestion for a useful app.
Would it be possible to create a “scheduled-launcher” (based on cron or something) that could launch any app at any specified date/time?
You guessed it, the idea is to turn my iPod Touch into a web-radio-alarm-clock by launching the iRadio app each morning.
That would be SO nice to have.
Let me know if you can/want/have the time to do it
Or maybe it already exists?

November 21st, 2007 at 8:53 am
Hey, this is great! Thanks again for another loverly app
For the stupid people like me, can you add a hint button? Or maybe just the ability to restart with a different word, instead of closing the app? I dunno, it’s fun as hell as it is.. psha..and not to mention hockey. get outta here, thats the most fun app for sure.

mr. walkakieTALKIE: have you heard of a thing called “speakers”?
November 21st, 2007 at 9:32 am
@my homie: fool ur wrong
@Sean: wtf since when is “tried” and “chum” not a word??? I couldnt get past those mixed letters since ur app wouldnt acknowledge them as words.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:36 am
@walkkakie: dude.. you give up too easy. how about “tired” and “much”?
November 21st, 2007 at 9:42 am
Nice Game! Much respect to your work and that you are spending so much time in progging for us, Sean!
By the way: Miendo´s web-radio-alarm-clock-idea is great.

Awesome APP, does each word only have one correct possible solution, or is it a random generator, that compares with a list of know good words.
Would it be possible to put the known good words in a txt file or something so it is editable
that way it would be possible to create txt files for different languages in case someone is not so creative with the english one. There could even be a holiday specific one with just x-mess words.
I see lots of possibility here….
November 21st, 2007 at 9:51 am
Agreed about the list. Love the app, but I have D L E and A. I have done both DEAL and LEAD. Neither word is being recognized as a word.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:52 am
@Mario: Yeah, it only has one correct answer for a given play. Not ideal, but it works for the most part.
The words are in a text file already. If you know how to get into your phone/ipod with ssh and use a text editor and such, you can modify it easily. Just edit the file: /Applications/Mixup.app/wordlist. It’s just a plain text file with a word on each line.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:54 am
@gsmumbo: sometimes it’s tricky when the same letters are used by multiple words… DALE, maybe? Not sure.. there’s only so many combinations.
November 21st, 2007 at 9:54 am
Oh, sorry about the last post. Turns out it was an I, nor an L.
For some reason I saw the I and thought lower case L. Good job on the app sean! Keep up the good work. I’m rooting for you!

November 21st, 2007 at 10:23 am
@Sean — You did it again…….fun app, I know what I will be doing all morning…
November 21st, 2007 at 11:13 am
I just want to say that it will be great to have an application of :
1.-Lava lamp and somehow change the colors
2.-another applications like pantone colors to choose the right colors when someone wants to pick a color to change a wall on the go.
3.- a slot machine
Thanks.

@Sean: ahhh ok, i thought this app was supposed to be like twisted.
Anyways, I heard this amazing idea for an app. It shouldn’t be too hard.
Can you create a worm hole with the iPhone. I’m getting sick of having to walk 10 steps to the refrigerator or to the TV. It’d be nice to have shortcut through space and time and I imagine it wouldn’t be too hard.
If you could create one of these infamous wormholes leading to my bed to my refrigerator, you would be on my top 20 favorite list!
Thanks!
November 21st, 2007 at 11:40 am
@talkie: A wormhole would just be in your top 20? Wow.. you must have high standards…
November 21st, 2007 at 11:42 am
@Sean: Hey, have you taken into consideration my request for turning the
iPhone into a mountain/hill?
I’ve already ordered some custom sleek shoes which I’ve made sure won’t scratch the screen when hiking for long hours. I know there would be a lot of dangers in hiking on an iPhone, but just make a warning.
All right, got to go! Looking for a tent that will fit on the iPhone.

hey sean, two things:
1)when I try to download this it says downloading and it goes but then when it says installing but then it exits to springboard. Any solutions?
2)I think brickbreacker would be a great application forone day. I love playing it on my brothers blackberry.
November 21st, 2007 at 3:16 pm
Are you taking the day off tomorrow?
I would be glad to approve your request.
maybe, maybe, I can approve you for friday too.
November 21st, 2007 at 5:05 pm
The WakeUp-iRadio idea is good but when you start the app you have to chose the radio station first to hear the music. So that aint work with automated running.
btw: coding such a thing can’t be a big thing as the iphone has a running cron daemon.

how bout spades? the card game
November 22nd, 2007 at 2:52 am
@Eric: You’re probably out of disk space in your system partition (300MB). Try uninstalling something and try again.
November 22nd, 2007 at 6:37 am
I had the letters d a n g e r and danger wasn’t right ,any solutions?… This game should have a timer for improvements and high scoredr
November 22nd, 2007 at 8:00 am

November 22nd, 2007 at 3:36 pm
This app was awesome. I spent a long time playing with it when I used it. Awesome!!!!!
November 22nd, 2007 at 3:52 pm
Absolutely love word games. Thank you so much Sean for a great application.
November 23rd, 2007 at 8:06 am
Heya Sean! congratz for this app and all the hard work
you’re doing here!
Mixup is great and i think it has a big potential for V2
- Time for each word (and lives if you don’t solve on-time)
- Points depending of time completed/# of letters
- High scores
- Multiplayer (wifi with other iphones)
in multiplay can be added some ‘arena’ option where custom words are typed by gamers so the other has to guess it in certain ammount of time and when a gamer missed let’s say 5 words he losts.
I don’t know…just a bunch of ideas!!!!
Thanks for all!!!!

I deleted the original word list and made a new one comprising of taboo words, its one of my friends’ favourite games now
November 26th, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Why don’t you publish that word list?
I love it… Very smooth interface and so perfectly intuitive!
November 27th, 2007 at 5:05 pm
Well, this game has become me fave one. I just miss the opportunity to swap with extra languages. At least it helps me practice English

How about a v2 of all your apps through December?
Many thanks for the time spent, Sean, I do appreciate!
November 27th, 2007 at 9:21 pm
gets me through borign days at school ! thanks ! me and my friends hold competitions on the bus to see who can ge tthe most words in a minute. my record is 19 in a minute.
November 28th, 2007 at 2:45 am
Sean, what a fun game. I have done a small Swedish word list that’s available at http://tilde.se/mixup.swedish.wordlist Feel free to add it to the dist if you like.
/Rickard.
November 30th, 2007 at 6:46 pm
Ok, worked my French words list out. There are a bit less than 25.000 words of 4 to 6 letters. That’s much more than the original list, but Mixup handles it quite nicely!
To install them, you need to have the basics : access the iPhone/iTouch folders through ssh, go to Applications, Mixup.app. Rename wordlist to keep safe, then copy wordlistFR and rename it wordlist. You’re done. You can add a french background if you feel inclined to do so, use default.png.
There files are here:
wordlistFR: http://www.mediafire.com/?5st4kexnn9h
default.png: http://www.mediafire.com/?7uoy29me4mm
Sean, you can include both files if you want in a (much anticipated and awaited) forthcoming new version. I have made them both (typed the words list for another purpose and shot the picture), so no copyrights whatsoever.
