Day 27: Wallpaper
Today’s app is another social photo sharing one - but with a twist. It shares your iPhone or iPod’s wallpaper image and lets you see what others are using for theirs. You can also tap on a wallpaper and claim it as your own.
Enjoy!
Update: I finally got some time today and updated the app with the ability to save to your camera roll. Have fun!
November 27th, 2007 at 7:58 am
least likely to get a dick on this one,,, unless the perverts like using it as their wallpaper.
November 27th, 2007 at 8:02 am
You can just add a porn picture as you wallpaper and then upload it, but I guess if you like taking pictures of your genitalia you wont go through that much preperation.
Awesome app, maybe you could make one that takes a screenshot of the summerboard and then upleads it on top of the screensaver, so we could see how many apps people have…
November 27th, 2007 at 8:13 am
Sean… just want to say thanks for the great apps. Some are awesome, some I never installed, and some I uninstalled because they weren’t for me. But… I am impressed with your efforts all the same.
This one is pretty awesome. It would be awesome if there was a way to save some of these to the phone.
Congrats on almost being done.
November 27th, 2007 at 8:38 am
This is truly a great application. The ability to steal other peoples wallpaper is a great enhancement, now I don’t have to use the screenshot feature lol
November 27th, 2007 at 8:41 am
Now this is cool. I found several I like! Just wandering, If I see one I want to keep and file so I can use a different one, where on the phone is it stored? We can go there and “back it up”!
November 27th, 2007 at 8:45 am
@Bobby
the current wallpaper is stored under /var/root/library
November 27th, 2007 at 8:46 am
p.s. is this the first step in file-sharing for the iPhone?! Sean you may have created a monster, good job =)
November 27th, 2007 at 9:10 am
Best yet! You, sir, rock the casbah.
A “save as…” would be sweet (as I have to bail and use finder to rename the wallpapers if I want to keep them, and I do)
Also - you might do a MD5 checksum on the wallpapers to eliminate dups - The default earth image is pretty, but it shows up a *lot*. I also assume I’m re-uploading my own wallpaper every time I run it…
November 27th, 2007 at 9:14 am
Very cool app — thanks! Lots of very cool wallpapers out there!
November 27th, 2007 at 9:16 am
@Tom: if I have time today, I’m going to toy with the code a bit (possibly add a save option) - but it’s not looking promising, unfortunately.
It does try to upload every time you start, but there’s a cookie so I can avoid one phone from filling up the system with a ton of dupes. So that part of it isn’t a big deal - although the md5sum idea is a much cooler idea and now I’m kind of upset I’m busy today and might not have time to add it…
November 27th, 2007 at 9:20 am
nice app! who posted that fat dog?
thanx for the ‘red death’
November 27th, 2007 at 9:31 am
@Tom: ok, so I had a few minutes and implemented MD5 on the server side.
Hopefully that will cut down on the dupes of the default wallpapers. It’ll take awhile until the old dupes are thinned out and replaced with new stuff, though.
November 27th, 2007 at 9:47 am
yay wallpapers!!!
now i dont have to use the osx one anymore :DDD
November 27th, 2007 at 9:56 am
i love this app, wallpaper tv, all wallpaper, all the time.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:01 am
It is cool but I am wondering.-
Does it eats the bandwith and battery when you’re not using the app?
where does this dll or cookie stores inside the system?
does this app change some files in the X-Os?
November 27th, 2007 at 10:06 am
@julian:
- “Does it eats the bandwith and battery when you’re not using the app?”
Nope. It does not run at all unless it is up on your screen and you’re watching/using it.
- “where does this dll or cookie stores inside the system?”
The cookie is just a web thing. Most websites uses cookies for logging users in or storing preferences. They are cached and managed by the OS/Safari on the iphone/ipod. Don’t worry about that. They go away on their own and are a part of normal web technology.
- “does this app change some files in the X-Os?”
There are no changes to any OS files on the iphone/ipod, if that is what you’re asking. It doesn’t do anything dangerous or risky or even very complicated.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:09 am
hey it would be great if you could actually save the wallpapers you select. i tried to find where it even saves the 1 so i could ftp and save it. thanx
November 27th, 2007 at 10:13 am
thanks a lot cause I love the app!!
November 27th, 2007 at 10:14 am
simply great!
with only one day to bring us a new idea, the variety is impressive.
Im very curious to see what happens next month.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:35 am
well you can either ftp to the phone and copy over the LockBackground.png in var/root/Library everytime you apply 1 or just use the screenshot utility from here:http://robota.nl/home and everytime you like 1 take a screenshot. i have 15 of them stored in my camera roll and the quality is great. hope this helps
November 27th, 2007 at 10:39 am
if you want to save individual wallpaper, and you have fast fingers, use DOCK screenshot
November 27th, 2007 at 10:41 am
or to slow down the image change time, use EDGE connection instead of wifi
November 27th, 2007 at 10:42 am
Wonderful App, very useful, people have some GREAT background pics, Thank you!
Um… how do you access /var/root/library on the phone, Safari doesn’t bring it up
November 27th, 2007 at 10:43 am
hey, great app!
might i suggest prev and next button?
i seem to have missed a few interesting ones…
thanks a bunch for a great app
November 27th, 2007 at 10:50 am
@rod
ok i have the screen shot app, but how do I hide all the other apps on my phone to take a pic of just the screen?
I’m sorry i know I’m asking all these questions at the risk of sounding dumb
November 27th, 2007 at 10:56 am
http://cre.ations.net/creation/dock
us this dock screenshot app, the sunburst is always in the lower right corner so you can take the snap while viewing the wallpaper (no icons on screen)
November 27th, 2007 at 11:06 am
SwEeTLiLGuRL if you have the screenshot app from the link i posted you should see 2 buttons on your screen, snap and view. just launch wallpaper.app and when you see a screen you like just snap it. touch to the bottom of the snap button. it will take a few tries.hope this helps. if not let me know and i`ll help you
November 27th, 2007 at 11:11 am
fyi: dock stores the images in the CAMERA ROLL
http://cre.ations.net/creation/dock
November 27th, 2007 at 11:29 am
Ok rod thank you very much, works like a charm. It seems that my screen shot doesn’t like to work all the time so I had to reboot the phone, and no problems now
November 27th, 2007 at 11:33 am
SwEeTLiLGuRL if you have dock installed that`s why. it doesn`t work well with dock. glad you got it working.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:56 am
Have an App do this with the music library and you’ll bring down the itunes industry lol
November 27th, 2007 at 12:03 pm
Finaly a great app that works just as fine with the iPod Touch as well as the iPhone
great, thanks sean, best app yet!
November 27th, 2007 at 12:06 pm
Sean - excellent idea!!!! Very, very cool!! I’ve seen so many cool pictures through this! I would personally donate $10 if you could add the ability to save these pictures to the photo album or a directory or something!! Email is my name w/ no spaces @gmail
Keep up the amazing work!!
November 27th, 2007 at 12:43 pm
AWESOME!!!!!
November 27th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
Sweet app:) Great job and please update when u get a moment!! It will be great if u can save it by one click:P
November 27th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
Not a big deal, and sorry to double post, but once the program asks you if you want to save it as your background, if you touch anywhere on the screen besides the buttons or the picture (ie the black border around the buttons or the text where it says “what’s yours is mine…”) a second prompt will come up, and you can infinitely create those boxes from the bottom. Not a big deal, like I said, but just lettin you know.
November 27th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
to access /var/root/library download MobileFinder from installer.app and use it. from mobile finder you can copy and paste, rename, move and many other things
November 27th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
[…] More questions answered here: http://blog.bigzaphod.org/2007/11/27/day-27-wallpaper/ […]
November 27th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
is it possible to add a save button to save it to a map with the name wallpapers ?
November 27th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
Could be the best app of the day yet. Would love to see stats on the web page of the most downloaded ones, etc.
November 27th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
sometimes it just gets stuck on one wallpaper. Why?
November 27th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
damn cool Sean!
where is this source code? :o)
November 27th, 2007 at 4:32 pm
this app RULE!!!!!!!!!
November 27th, 2007 at 4:33 pm
Sean - I sent you an email before finding this page. Another vote for a save-as option. That would rock.
Thanks for all of your awesome apps. What a month!
November 27th, 2007 at 5:23 pm
nice one sean lovin this app, I finnally got some new wallpapers
November 27th, 2007 at 5:26 pm
iGUITAR? hmm…
November 27th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
This is by far my favorite of the apps. I prop my iphone up as slide show.
November 27th, 2007 at 6:31 pm
sigh, why couldn’t you pick a month with 40 days
November 27th, 2007 at 6:48 pm
Thanks for app.
When people open this app. other people will see all the pictures on other people iphone no matter where they store the pictures?
November 27th, 2007 at 7:27 pm
Its a countdown to x-mas App! I think! iT would be cool
It would have the mouth of December
and each day you can click the day on the callender and then it would show some cool thing everyday
untill x-mas…
i think this would be sweet!
anyone agree?
November 27th, 2007 at 7:28 pm
I think
there should be
DRUMS
PIANO
GUITAR
THEN ITS A VIRTUAL BAND!
November 27th, 2007 at 7:34 pm
@erioc umm… That would be difficult. Anything good app’s are difficult for me =[
November 27th, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Wow! I’m in love! Some VERY tasteful backgrounds here!

If anyone sees my face (in a white shirt) just ignore it, it’ll go away…
November 27th, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Love this one, neat idea, and fun to see what people are creating for it. A great update to it next month would be to add the save feature so we could use the wallpaper later. A lot have people have had wallpapers I liked but I can only use one. I would love to be able to easily save it for later. Again, thank you for the work you are doing.
November 27th, 2007 at 9:57 pm
Is the app supposed to close after choosing a background or sending to camera roll? It didn’t do this before the update. Would love it to stay open.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:01 pm
Instead of a save option would it be possible to have any wallpapers we select to use either copied to our own wallpaper list or our photo gallery automatically?
Going though I see a bunch I end up liking!
November 27th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
@Douglas: What do you mean by close? The whole app closes?
November 27th, 2007 at 10:12 pm
Yay! Save to camera roll! Thank you sean!
November 27th, 2007 at 10:13 pm
umm… its broken on the iTouch now
if i press ‘Nevermind’ it just closes off. It would be understandable if it broke when i pressed ’save to camera roll’ cos touches dont have a camera roll… but… it quits when i press ‘Nevermind’ too…
November 27th, 2007 at 10:18 pm
Absolutely hands down the BEST application you’ve written. Especially now with the 1.2 update, this is one of my favorite applications for the iPhone. I’m a little bummed that you didn’t reply to my email with the 11 app suggestions (Flamin Finger?! c’mon!) but this app makes up for the abandonment.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:21 pm
Is it broken for everyone on the iPod touch? That doesn’t make any kind of sense… (I just pushed a version 1.3… but I don’t see why my changes in 1.3 would affect the touch - but it was worth a shot.) Let me know.
Confused…
November 27th, 2007 at 10:22 pm
@Justin: Sorry for not replying.. a lot of people haven’t got replies.
I get so freaking much email now that I don’t know what to do with it all!
November 27th, 2007 at 10:23 pm
on my iPod touch the app also closes after either selecting any option. it does manage to set the wallpaper. as far as camera roll option, since touches have no camera and there is no contents in Media/DCIM i guess that feature is out of our grasp. awesome app though!
November 27th, 2007 at 10:28 pm
@Maraklov: Is that with version 1.3 or an earlier version of Wallpaper? Man.. this crash thing makes no kind of sense because I didn’t even change that code. I just added a menu option - which I’ve done about a billion times before throughout the month
November 27th, 2007 at 10:29 pm
Sean, you’re a doll.
You wrote a wonderful app, then went and improved upon it ‘cos we’re a bunch of lazy bums.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:32 pm
@Maraklov: Well, I don’t know where the crashing is, but I changed the Camera Roll code to try to make the proper directories if they don’t already exist (which they wouldn’t on the touch). In theory, it should cause your touch to show up in iPhoto now if you save something and then try to sync. (Assuming you’re on a mac.) Maybe…
I wish I had a touch to test on
November 27th, 2007 at 10:35 pm
@Sean: wallpaper 1.3 wasn’t showing up in installer.app, so i removed and added your source again. and 1.4 is available now, but the same crash happens. was testing with 1.2 before.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:39 pm
I’ve updated to 1.4 now and it still closes everytime, meaning just goes back to springboard. no matter what option I choose, even “nevermind”. It does what it is supposed to do. It does change the background or adds to camera roll. But then just closes.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:41 pm
Arg. So annoying.
I just changed a little tidbit in version 1.5. Can you guys test it and see what happens? *sigh*
November 27th, 2007 at 10:43 pm
Sean, absolutely superb! Brilliant!
I love it, thank you so much for your hard work. Thanks for sharing, much appreciated.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:44 pm
still crashes sean. Great job though.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:45 pm
I’m on 1.5, Still crashed when hitting nevermind, restarting iphone…. ok, restarted…. set as wallpaper crashes but changed wallpaper… add to camera roll crashes but added to camera roll.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:45 pm
Sorry should have said 1.5
November 27th, 2007 at 10:51 pm
come on guys, click that donate button, Sean needs to have all the hardware he needs to try out the code he’s writing.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:54 pm
Sean:
Fantastic work, it’s an amazing app. Definately one of your best. And I gotta give much props on the updates-made-to-order. You spoil us.
Not to sound stingy, but please try not to burn your valuable iPhone developing time pandering to the touchies. Why do they have to be so damn needy?
Gotta go- have to go curse out Julius Caesar for making November too short.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:54 pm
dumb question, but how are you guys getting the repository to update? whenever i restart installer.app it still shows 1.4 unless i add and delete the source again.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:01 pm
tapping “refresh” on the left opposite the “edit” button the the sources page in Installer.app
November 27th, 2007 at 11:07 pm
@Douglas: thanks, now i’m up to date with my crashing wallpaper app. yay!
@Sean: i’m only kidding. i’m sure you’ll get it working eventually.
@Chill23: touchies are people too. just cheap people.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:20 pm
1.5 works great on my 1.1.1 iPhone.
I would love a next button!
November 27th, 2007 at 11:26 pm
Ok.. 1.6 out now. I have no idea if it’ll fix the problems on the touch or not.. but I’m going to bed as I’m quite exhausted.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:27 pm
You got it, you rock, we’ll put out a post praising you once again, Great job Sean!
November 27th, 2007 at 11:28 pm
btw, that was 1.6 that worked for me, on v1.1.1 iPhone.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:29 pm
@Douglas: Did the older versions (after 1.0) also crash for you on your iPhone? So maybe it wasn’t just a touch problem then.. odd. Maybe it was a firmware thing. (I’m still on 1.0.2)
Going to bed now.. for real…
November 27th, 2007 at 11:35 pm
all versions crashed for me besides the very first version (1.0) and the current version (1.6). btw, this is our favorite app!
November 27th, 2007 at 11:35 pm
1.6 fixed it. no crashes. not sure how to get the files off the camera roll short of grabbing them through scp or afp, but it works. very well done sean!
November 27th, 2007 at 11:37 pm
With the ipod touch is there a way to get it to save wallpapers? saving to camera roll doesn’t work since the touch doesn’t have a camera. thanks.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:53 pm
Thanks for the save feature. I wasn’t expecting an update until the month was complete. Thanks again
November 28th, 2007 at 12:18 am
If you have an iPod Touch, I believe the app creates the camera roll folder. If so, open up iBrickr (or whatever you Mac folks use) and head to:
/var/root/Media/DCIM/100APPLE/
November 28th, 2007 at 12:47 am
is there any way i can create a album for that folder with out needing the camera app. and if not were can i find the app to download and install.
November 28th, 2007 at 2:00 am
Just got this app - absolutely great… thanks Sean!
November 28th, 2007 at 2:14 am
this is the best app so far i think! keep em comin
November 28th, 2007 at 2:17 am
Could it be made to save the files into it’s own folder rather than the camera roll? I dont know if that’s possible, but it would be nice to have wallpaper in one folder and photo’s in another.
November 28th, 2007 at 3:52 am
Great Work!!
The best app so far besides Level!
Really loving this 1 app a day
November 28th, 2007 at 4:47 am
Great APP
Please make to save local on the iPhone favorite wallpapers
November 28th, 2007 at 7:04 am
Here is an idea for another app. For my wallpaper, I have my name and contact info in case lose my iPhone. It would be cool if you wrote an app that let a user enter their contact info, and choose a background image, and then the app would generate wallpaper with the contact info and wallpaper.
November 28th, 2007 at 8:31 am
ok ok
so i saved to camera roll right
and i guess i got a couple in there
how do i check it
or how do i open up my “Camera Roll?”
THANKS!!
November 28th, 2007 at 8:51 am
Can anyone tell me how to actually save the wallpapers on the iPod Touch? I’ve heard alot of people say different things, but not a (small) step by step on actually saving (and USING) the saved wallpapers…
PLEASE HELP!
November 28th, 2007 at 9:39 am
Yeah, I also want an option to save to your ipod touch/iphone. That will be great!
November 28th, 2007 at 10:42 am
Sean, awesome apps this month, really. I have Burp, Quest, Mixup and Wallpaper now. I have used all the other but just got bored with them. But these four are addictive!
I have one question. Will we ever be able to view the Wallpaper images online like Burp and Quest?
Thanks Again for all the hard work. Keep it up man!
November 28th, 2007 at 11:24 am
Enjoy 1.8 cheer!!!
November 28th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
November 28th, 2007 at 12:29 pm
Great app… its to addicting… I have it plugged into power besides my monitor at all times to glaze at it!
November 28th, 2007 at 1:49 pm
lol - Angel - I do the same thing at work!! hahaha
Sean - BRILLIANT APP. I’ve saved 240 pics from it already, and more than half were screenshots from before you updated it. Bravo, man. Bravo.
November 28th, 2007 at 4:17 pm
One of the best iApp-a-Day app that I installed. Thanks!
November 28th, 2007 at 5:58 pm
Anyway to filter out the porn by asking users if it’s explicit before they post and then offer users the option to disallow explicit content before they start viewing? It’s too hard to use this app in public with all the nudity.
November 28th, 2007 at 6:39 pm
Thanks for the update. Great other than the porn.
November 28th, 2007 at 8:18 pm
This is definitely the best app. I love the other photo/social experiment apps but unfortunately they all were ruined by the porn kings. Seems like those apps bring out the 10 year old boy every time. It’s also a little embarrassing that people from other countries see the “ugly” side of America…. Thanks again for all your hard work!
November 28th, 2007 at 10:13 pm
Forgot to say thanks in my previous post a couple posts up. This really is a creative app and I’ve gotten lots of good wallpapers out of it.
November 28th, 2007 at 10:56 pm
yo this app is SICK i use it all the time for new wallpaper.. i have no need to put new pics on my phon… thanks so much for this simple convenient app
November 28th, 2007 at 11:16 pm
you rock sean
November 28th, 2007 at 11:19 pm
how can i get wallpaper 1.8? its not coming up as a update with installer.
November 29th, 2007 at 1:32 am
It’s really good for sharing the resource all over theowrld.
November 29th, 2007 at 6:25 am
No 1.8 on the installer
November 29th, 2007 at 6:49 am
Duh… Look at the Name… It’s Se@n, NOT SeAn…
LOL, You guys will fall for anything.
November 29th, 2007 at 9:49 am
Yeah, I don’t like that look-a-likes :S But It was great if there was a newer version
With wallpaper save
November 29th, 2007 at 11:03 am
Guys, take it for what it is. What you’re calling “porn” is what someone else is calling more of a “pinup.” Calling that stuff porn makes you sound like 70 year old conservative nutjobs. The female form is a beautiful thing - granted, half of the nude females have pretty nasty fakies, there is still art - wallpaper worthy art - to be wrought from it.
Yell “OMG PORN” when it becomes tasteless - and being denizens of the internet, I trust you know *exactly* what I mean by “tasteless.”
Now, the burp app? Yeah - there’s definitely some more tasteless stuff going on there. What do you expect from an app that acquires pictures from the camera, though?
November 29th, 2007 at 4:59 pm
Rory - This is a great app. I know what porn is. My kids love my iphone and I let them use the cool apps I have, but I can’t keep this app installed if they’re around. I don’t want my 8 year old son checking out the beautiful female form. I like the cool background, but not everything is suitable for all. If you don’t understand that, there’s no hope.
I understand that this is an open app to anyone and that there is no way to stop certain things from being posted. There is a difference between porn and pinups, so it would be nice to see a question asked of the poster.
November 29th, 2007 at 5:57 pm
Dude, wallpaper is a great app. I love it.
If I may, I’d love to make a suggestion. It would be cool to be able to control the movements through the available content. Scroll to the next one. I’d like to be able to get past some of the nude shots (my kid plays with the phone a lot)
I nice feature might be making the actual phones wall paper change based on what you’ve collected. So every time you turn the phone back on from sleep, there could be a new wallpaper.
I’ve got a lot of your apps, they are great!
November 29th, 2007 at 10:22 pm
there are sexy women…. great!
November 30th, 2007 at 11:11 am
Hey Se@n,
Quick question, how does this actually work? I notice that there are quite a few wall papers that are persistent and pretty constant. Do you have some favorites that are mixed in with actual user wall papers? While most of those are really cool, it seems to me that it would be better if there was a little bit bigger mix of actual user wallpapers. I love the cool ones but I get a little tired of seeing the same ones over and over (Louis Vuitton patterns, liquid flame, denied-drag your thumb). I’m just curious, I still think this is the most captivating of your apps but a little more randomness would keep it interesting….
Thanks again for the huge effort, you have done more to bring interest to 3rd party apps then anyone so far. It seems like development has really dropped off since the SDK announcement, which is unfortunate.
November 30th, 2007 at 11:17 am
@ibagwan: I am not Se@n.. but the actual author.
Anyway, they are ALL user wallpapers. I haven’t seeded anything. What you’re seeing is a lot of people who have the same wallpapers because *they* think they are cool so the images show up often. There’s some code to try to filter duplicates based on hashes of the actual files, but it doesn’t always work right (a hash of a JPEG copy of a PNG isn’t the same even though it mostly looks the same to a human.)
December 2nd, 2007 at 12:08 pm
Hey Sean, sorry about that, I thought Se@n was you. That’s pretty amazing that there are that many people that stay on wallpaper that you see such a huge repeat. It’s really interesting though because it seems like a fairly uselsss app and I can not stop myself from watching it! I plug in my iphone and just let it sit and play wall papers all day! Thanks again for all you hard work, I really do believe that you have led the way for developers!
December 3rd, 2007 at 1:08 am
Love the app, would it be possible to add a save feature for us ipod touch users?
December 5th, 2007 at 11:21 pm
Very nice

saving to camera roll doesnt work on the ipod touch (because it has no camera ? :P)
Could you plz add an option to just add it to a folder that i can see in my “Pictures” app? the one that ships with the ipods
December 7th, 2007 at 11:40 am
Where are these photos stored on the internet? Are we able to access them without wallpaper.app? I would really like to see a way to quickly move to the next photo, instead of waiting 5 minutes until I see a new wallpaper. Also is the source code released for this app? I would take the time to modify it so that you can move on to the next photo if you are busy.

It’s a killer app!
Deviant!
I really like to share my personally stictly selected wallpapers along with other ppl who many of them selected their walls the same way as I did!
Also It’s good as an online screensaver/slideshow!
Keep It Up m8!
I really would love to see a little something for December!

How about an app complimenting this one, that automatically changes wall paper when put to sleep or hourly or something? Best app by far, wildly entertaining. I now have hundreds of pictures, I would love to rotate them automatically. Awesome work.

A great software.
December 17th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
I have a ipod touch and i use a PC and when I click “save to roll” nothing happens seeing as iTouch doesnt have a camera, and nothing syncs when I hook it up to iTunes…Can you help?
December 18th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
same issue as bryan
December 19th, 2007 at 5:20 am
Hi Sean, I have the same request as Mat above
quote: “Could it be made to save the files into it’s own folder rather than the camera roll? I dont know if that’s possible, but it would be nice to have wallpaper in one folder and photo’s in another.”
The issues is that the camera roll folder becomes very slow responding because of the saved wallpapers. I am on a iPhone 1.0.2.
Thank you very much for all the great apps you came up with
Have a very Merry Christmas!
December 24th, 2007 at 4:26 am
Same issue as Bryan and logan
Can you please fix this … or someone else?
December 25th, 2007 at 10:54 am
Please make a similar app for Macbook plzzzz
December 25th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
is there a website where i can see all of the wallpapers at once? i would love to see them all at once, and pick and choose what i want.
December 29th, 2007 at 12:52 am
This is fantastic!
It be nice to see a poll or counter that tracks what wallpaper receives the most downloads/uses
great work. thanks for contributing
December 30th, 2007 at 10:10 pm
Sean,
Same comment as those above - can you make the “save location” configurable for those of us who use a iPod Touch and have no “camera roll”? Would be nice to save it in another folder.
Great work! Also, is the source code available for this?
Thanks,
Gary

Same issue with being connected to a PC and no Camera roll on the iPod Touch. GREAT WORK!! Thank you so much!
January 2nd, 2008 at 11:46 am
For those - like me - with a Touch, it is possible to fool the Springboard into displaying both the Photo app and the Camera app at the same time. Although the Touch does not have the camera, the Photos app is essentially the one and same app that shows and captures images. To do this you need to know how to edit plists on the Touch (this I will not explain). Go to the plist at /Applications/MobileSlideSow.app/Info.plist and add copy the Camera settings found under the M68,N82 platforms and put them under the N45 platform setting (there should be only Photos now). By adding this, we allow all roles of the Photo application (eventhough there is no camera). You should get an icon for the Camera now, and when you start it will always complain about space to store pictures. Ignore it and go to the Camera Roll viewer. Sean put all the backdrops in the DCM folder where the camera normalyl puts it’s stuff.
January 12th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Where does it save to on an ipod touch?
January 13th, 2008 at 9:33 am
Wallpaper puts the files in:
/private/var/root/Media/DCIM/100APPLE
Same directory the iPhone camera uses on an iPhone.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:28 am
is there a way you can move the images in the camera roll to the photo gallery using mobile finder?

Ok i updated it and it can now saave to the wallpaper library on the ipod touch. How can I delete unwanted photoos stored here?
January 18th, 2008 at 1:25 am
Love the app….saw that it was updated with the add to wallpaper library feature and i love it.
before this feature was added i would have to SSH into my ipod touch’s /private/var/root/Media/DCIM/100APPLE Directory to get the pics onto my mac and than back onto my ipod via itunes sync with iphoto.
now that the add to wallpaper library option is available in the new version of wallpaper i was wondering. How can i get all my other wallpapers from my iphoto library into the wallpaper directory on my ipod.
Is it just a folder that i will have to SSH into and transfer that way?
Love the App. Defiantly a keeper. Keep up the good work.
January 22nd, 2008 at 3:08 am
Hi how to un install unwanted wallpapers?
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:39 am
Hey this is an amazing app but i was just wondering if it is possibal to gwt it for windows
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 pm
****Don’t get me wrong, this is probably my most used app, but I saved some pictures to the wallpaper part instead of the camera roll part on accident, and now i can’t figure out how to delete them completely off my phone… Any help please?
January 23rd, 2008 at 11:33 pm
For those who stored wallpapers in the actual wallpaper directory and you want to get them off the iPhone - you’ll need to SSH or use finder and go to /Library/Wallpaper
January 26th, 2008 at 7:31 am
Hi brandon, I stored the wallpaper in my actual wallpaper directory, I’ve used finder to go to library/wallpaper but i don’t see a thing…What can i do?
January 26th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Yeah how do we uninstall wallpapers????
January 27th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
App does not seem to work under 1.1.3 anymore.
It attempts to save to the Camera Roll or Wallpaper library, but those locations have changed in 1.1.3 I believe, so it saves them to the old locations and they don’t show up in camera roll or wallpaper library.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Great app, congrtz Sean! Same quest as Jack and Royston. How do I get rid of unwanted wallpapers from my default folder?
many thanks
January 29th, 2008 at 10:41 am
how do i get rid of wallpaper that i have donlowed but otherwise great job
January 30th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
1.1.3 breaks this app. I think I’ve figured out half of it.
/private/var/root/Media/DCIM/100APPLE needs a symbolic link to
/var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE If you do that the “Add to Camera Roll” option works.
I cannot get the “Add to Wallpaper Library” option to work though. Any ideas?
February 5th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
Specifically, to allow the current version of Wallpaper with 1.1.3 (or at least my half-baked jailbroken 1.1.3) do the following:
(0) take a photo with your iPhone to have all the file directories needed get created automatically
(1) ssh root@YOUR.IPHONE.IP.ADDRESS
The password, unless you’ve changed it, is “alpine” (less quote marks).
(2) ln -s /var/mobile/Media/DCIM/ /var/root/Media/DCIM
This will make a soft link from the now-existing /var/mobile media directories to the obsolete /var/root ones. Wallpaper, not having yet been updated, tries to use /var/root. When it is updated you need do nothing at all, nor when 1.1.4 is released.
Share and enjoy!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:24 am
Hey, I have to say this is one of the more addicting applications that I just love. I did just upgrade to 1.1.3 and it seems like it wont save to wallpaper or camera roll, but it will set it as a background. Just wondering if you were going to continue updating this one, because I love it.
February 7th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
I must be missing something… I have saved several to wallpaper.. they are there and I can choose them.. but they are not in any of the folders specified by people here! (folder 100APPLE doesn’t even exist!).
I’m on 1.1.3 and can set as wallpaper or save as wallpaper, but not find them (want to take a few off and my wife wants a few for herself).
February 7th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
I forgot to say I’m (obviously) on a jailbroken Ipod touch.

i jail borke my iphone with a base downgrader and for some reason the wall paper app will not save in my camera roll or my wallpaper? any idea of fixing this issue?
February 14th, 2008 at 12:59 am
Through an OpenSSH link I have noticed that all the wallpapers are downloaded into…
/private/var/root/Media/DCIM/100APPLE
The camera can only locates images located in..
/var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE
Is there a way to link these two folders? and if so how?

Hi all !
How to make it work on an ipod touch ? There’s no camera roll on it. It was working for the library but dont work anymore since 1.1.3…
February 14th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
i have a quick Question for you
is there any way to fix this app without using BSD or opens ssh
if yes how?
thanks
February 15th, 2008 at 11:09 am
it seems I’m going to have to delete/restore my ipod to get it to work again.. and this is the second time directly after using this program… it makes my ipod say there are no photos in my photo section and if I plug it into itunes it says it needs to be restored…
February 15th, 2008 at 11:48 am
update:
just removing the wallpaper application and restarting my ipod has caused this:

@Defrostmode: That’s just not possible. I think your iPod is messed up, dude. It might need to be replaced.
February 15th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
I’m not joking… both times my ipod worked without a hitch until using this app. I’m in the process of getting back to jailbroken 1.1.3 now. is working great.
February 15th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
just want to say I use several of the other apps of yours with no probs whatsoever. I have nothing against you or apps you make.. just stating what happened.. twice.
once was about a week ago. the other was just today. have used anything and everything on my ipod besides this app between then. used this app and my pics disappeared (standard ‘no pics, add from itunes’ screen). uninstalled this app (and did nothing else) and the clip I posted happened.
Granted I just restored last time.. didn’t uninstall the app so that part was only this time.
February 15th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
I don’t know if any of this will tell you why or what I’m doing wrong but here is every step between my ipod and the problem.
-Ipod purchased at 1.1.3
-use autodown to downgrade my ipod to 1.1.1
-use jailbreakme.com to jailbreak and install installer
-add source in installer ijailbreak.com/repo.plist (or whatever it is)
-install bsd and bsd fix
-install openssh
-install and run ijailbreakmobile 1.1.1
-once updated setup what syncs with itunes
-install/run the fix email passwords from the ijailbreakmobile catagory
-run the remove 1.1.3 upgrade data (temp files)
-install apps (including wallpaper)
everthing works fine with all until I run wallpaper and choose to save one as wallpaper.. (it does. I go to settings/wallpaper and it is there with all the originals) check photos before and they are there, check photos after and they are “gone” and once I try to sync with itunes it says it’s in recovery mode and needs restored. It will work (play music, run all apps, go online, save wallpapers, ect) it just won’t sync with itunes anymore or show my pictures.
this time I didn’t want to restore so I went into installer and removed ‘wallpaper’ it did it’s normal loading thing it does after you add/remove something from installer and then went to the intro/welcome screen. I held down the power button and shut it off. After about 5 mins I turned it on and what you saw in the video happened.
I have not done any editing of my own like what is listed above at any point.
February 15th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
hey sean, please update wallpaper to run with 1.1.3, this is my favorite app and i dont want to add all sorts of soft links.
February 15th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
well I’m confused… I havent done any of the ’soft links’ or any editing whatsoever to make it work after I updated to 1.1.3… so… it shouldn’t work in the first place?
February 15th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Hey guys. some of you have requested a website where you can view all the images posted by wallpaper. I’ve made a little site to do that. http://www.wyldemann.com. it’s very alpha, but it functions. please leave your feedback. I’m working on an iphone version of the site so it looks better in the iphone browser.
February 15th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Hi,
I love this app, it’s great. But i’m unable to save a wallpaper on my 1.1.3 iphone.
None of the 3 options works.
Does any one knows hox to fix this?
Thanks anyway!
February 16th, 2008 at 6:43 am
Yep it would appear that you cannot save wallpapers in 1.1.3 on the iphone
February 16th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Honestly, I don’t know why people are surprised when they download silly updates that render 3p apps unusable. I am still running 1.0.1 because I find the ability to use the majority of 3p more important than the relatively minor updates that Apple schleps us.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
@Bigsquishy: Site is cool but often loads quite slowly…
February 17th, 2008 at 10:53 am
I haven’t found a 3rd party app (that I want) that doesn’t work on my 1.1.3 jailbroken ipod, except this one… and if I DO I can always go back.
February 18th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
I too have found that it won’t save in 1.1.3 It worked great in 1.1.2 In an effort to see if they went somewhere else in the phone I backed up my entire phone file structure to my harddrive using SCP and tried searching the entire directory but only find the photos I’ve taken or uploaded myself. Can’t find any from the wallpaper app. They were always named img_9###.jpg if anyone else wants to try looking for them.
February 19th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Chill23 — I’m working on the image loading issue.
anyway –new Website Feature !! wallpaper archiving!! http://www.wyldemann.com
due to the way Sean saves the wallpapers everytime you go to my site you may have notice the images change, but are never added to. To save space Sean randomly overwrites pictures on his server so he doesn’t have gig and gigs of photos stored on a server. so at most he has round 200 pictures. on my sites you can view the pictures that are currently on the wallpaper server. I’ve added a button below each image to archive that image and save it on my server. This just click on the archive link on the top of my site to see the images that have been archived. if you seen images that our duplicates in the archive, hit the “remove from archive” button. I”ll be adding a user system soon. Spread the word.
February 20th, 2008 at 3:14 am

March 4th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Sean,
You did a great job last year on this man. Thanks a bunch for all the great apps. I had actually missed this one until just recently. I updated the permissions using Cyberduck and I’m enjoying some great wallpapers thanks to you. for those that need instructions:
i used cyberduck, a free ftp client for mac.
sftp in using the ip address of your phone.
it should put you into private/var/root/
if not, get to that path.
“right-click” on wallpapers and change the permissions to have check boxes in all the boxes for all users. it should say 777.
close out of that window and you’re done!
March 5th, 2008 at 2:26 am
hey i have the wallpaper app i think its awesome but it would be better without all the porn on i u know. is there a way to get that off so ppl dont put that on? if so that would make it a better app! not like its not awesome enough but it would be cool.
March 5th, 2008 at 6:07 am
I just upgraded to 1.1.4 JB, Downloaded Wallpaper via iappaday, SSH’d into the ipod, changed the folder /library/wallpaper to 777 and was able to save the images to the wallpaper folder.
March 5th, 2008 at 6:11 am
Gotta say I love this app… use it daily!! I would rather add the images to my camera roll instead of the wallpaper folder… I’ve been trying to figure out which folder to try and change permissions but haven’t erached any conclusions… any help?

Why is it that I can post a pro obama pic but not Clinton or McCain?
March 6th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Well i researched around and found that on an iPod, the camera roll is turned off, obvioulsy, so i found a system plist file that turns it on. I replaced my old plist file for this new one.
****
Step 1: Download PList file http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3ETQ0YK3
Step 2: SSH into ipod folder: /System/Library/CoreServices/Springboard.app
Step 3: Rename your original N458P.plist file to N458P.plist.orig (for back up)
Step 4: Insert new plist file into folder then reboot ipod.
If this doesnt work out let me know, it may only were for certain Jailbreaks who knows…
March 7th, 2008 at 9:23 am
Everyone try to post a Clinton or McCain pic and see if it stays for more then a few mins. Its so funny that it wont that means some geek is watching all the pics and removing the ones he doesn’t like.. He must have no life and like naked men, normal b hussain obama supporter.
March 7th, 2008 at 9:45 am
Not vary american are they.. Must be part of the new muslim order.
March 9th, 2008 at 7:24 am
I just can say it is the best.
March 10th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Mine are not saving anymore as well with the 1.8 update. Is there anyway to put back the 1.7 update of wallpaper app??????????
March 11th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Seems blaq is right and rb maybe it’s what you are posting.
I tried putting up a clinton pic with support writing on it and boom gone in about 30 secs then I put a naked chick on and it was there for hours. I would test with an obama ad but wouldn’t want to give him the air time. Vote no to muslim rule in 08. That felt good
March 13th, 2008 at 11:53 am
hey sean, your app is really cool but my only concern Is how do I delete the ones I don’t like I even tried deleting the whole app and it still didn’t work. Can u please help!!! Thanks sean!
March 15th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
I have the same problem as Rod. I used 1.1.3 briefly then went back down to my original 1.1.2, and wallpaper 1.8 no longer saves the pictures in the proper folder. I have read up on something about setting a symbolic link that might make it work but need more specific information on it. If anyone can give us the instructions or point us to where we can get it that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hello Sean, Jason,
it seems like a lots ppl is having trouble saving the wallpapers since we upgraded to ver.1.8… I tried to link into the iPhone and change the folder’s permission, still it doesn’t save. Can we prey that ver.1.9 can come out soon to help us get this cool app back to normal?? or if possible, can we download ver.1.7 somewhere?
Please, looking forward to get the next version of Wallpaper…
BTW, you guys are the best!!! seldomly do you see great artists like you who creates such great software to benefit the world!!
March 17th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
I love the app, but when i try to add to my wallpaper library it doesnt show up up on the wallpapers in my settings. im using an ipod touch. anyone help??
March 19th, 2008 at 4:20 am
Dustin: Are you able to SSH into your ipod? then set the wallpaper folder permission to 755?
Davian: Are you speaking to me about creating the software? I did not assit or create the wallpaper app. Im simply a wannabe computer geek that messes with his ipod too much.
For everyone that cannot save the photos to their wallpaper folder, you can try to enable your camera roll folder by clicking here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Hh20_IGemTc
March 20th, 2008 at 1:21 am
Here is a link to Wallpaper 1.8 if no one can locate it: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=O6AJ7M1O
Just unzip the file, then SSH into iTouch or iPhone

Sean u are a genius!! The only thing I pray is that u enable it so it saves in somewhere other then camera roll OR enable it so that you can customize the images from wallpaper itself
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:24 am
Dear Sean
how can i download this software?
i couldn’t find it on INSTALLER
many regards
March 24th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Aboudeh: you need to add this source to your intaller:
Open installer, bottom right corner click sources, then at the top click edit, then add: http://iappaday.com/install
March 24th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Andrulin, if you read the above messages, you will find a link to enable the camera roll on 1.7 or 1.8. By enabling the camera roll you can have thumbnails of the photos as well as a slide show…

You need to add this source to your installer: http://iappaday.com/install
Assuming your already Jailbroken your ipod…

I’m trying to get this to work. At one point it was working (I was seeing backgrounds scroll by). every other time it just sits there showing my background. I share my wallpaper and it never shows up on the website. I double checked all the permissions are right, it’s just not showing the images. This is for iphone v1.1.3

FWIW everything worked fine this morning. May have just been a glitch.

@Todd: I think there may have been some large scale Internet outages in certain areas yesterday. That could have explained this. My ISP mentioned something about Sprint having some problems. Perhaps there was a major routing issue on a backbone. Some people couldn’t connect to the server and others could depending on which networks their packets were going through. Hopefully it’s cleared up now. *shrug*

Great app. Should be a way to show who’s wallpaper it is during the slide show (not necessary when saving). A great addition would be to browse all Wallpapers from the source and select from there. But great app without any additional changes.

I only get one wallpaper that keeps refreshing.
I have 1.1.4 and when I first installed the app, it worked great. A couple of weeks ago it quit working (don’t believe it was after an update or anything). Now, when I open it, I get the question if I want to share or not and - no matter how I answer it - I only get one wallpaper. The screen sort of flashes like it’s changing but it just shows the same wallpaper.
I have a few friends at work that began having the same problem around the same time. One of them restored his phone and Wallpaper works fine for him again. Surely there has to be a less drastic way to fix this…

same problem here as bigdaddyk

I am having the same issue

Ditto, same problem as BigDaddyK, and the two folks, directly above. It just starting acting up a few days ago. I’ve added so many new apps lately, it’s hard to tell if something else is involved.
I uninstalled/reinstalled the Wallpaper app this morning, but no joy. Running 1.1.4.

I have the same problem. I’m useing Fresh OTB(1.1.4) PWNED 1.1.4. I only get one wallpaper and then it just keeps sort of flashing. The screen does not go completely blank it just dims and then the brightness comes back up. If I wait for 10 minutes or so I can sometimes get to another wallpaper. I just can’t believe my bad luck. I had this great idea for a fun little animation based on “Jigsaw falling into place” by radio head. I really wanted to use all these different wallpapers as the jigsaw pieces. I little piece of everyday life from a community. PLEASE help. I just donated 10 dollars. (i know it’s not very much but I am a poor college student.

So, this is odd. I posted a few days back saying that I was experiencing the same problem as BigDaddyK, Doug, Christophe, and others. Last night, I thought to give it a try, and now everything is working normally!
I wonder if the problem is on the server end? Is it working okay for others now?

very great the 2.3’s new option: we ‘ll be able to comment all the wallpapers soon!
only got one problem: very long to open the app and a 5-6 seconds loading gap between each new wallpaper , is it normal?
would be even greater if we could have access and change our wallpaper’s user profile (even if it’s not tragical i forgot to put a photo in my profile)
something to dig in that direction i think: wallpaper users (better than twitter :)))
thank you for your precious works!

@negece: thanks
Glad you like the comments! Over time we’ll get some more stuff in there - like profile editing and things. Sort of slowing putting this all together
As for the slowness.. I think the problem is that the server is being hammered pretty hard right now with the new release of collage and wallpaper. There’s always been a 6-7 second lag between wallpapers in the slideshow, but the lag of loading comments and things is due to the server, I think.

Been having some issues myself. Works fine at work either on wifi or edge. When I get home (no cell service I live in the sticks) and hooks up to my home wifi which is satellite internet it freezes up. Before 2.3 update would only show my wallpaper. With 2.3 loading and spinning wheel. I’m on hughesnet with linksys wireless router….any ports that need to be opened up?

Great application, I have a question to the new option to comment, it already registers and I have realized several commentaries but as I can place a photo to my user, does not place it now when it registers to me and not like doing it

“Update: I finally got some time today and updated the app with the ability to save to your camera roll. Have fun!”
This is a great feature, but my iPhone only saves it to my “Wallpapers”-folder, so I can’t actually see the images like I can in “Camera Roll”.
Tried exporting the images too, but I only get corrupted png-files. Anything I am doing wrong here? Or can this be fixed?

i like the way wallpaper is evolving. i would like to see in the future may be a categories option you know landscapes, cars, girls, anime, adult, etc.. and a way to make a slide show directly from wallpaper app of the saved wallpapers
on the ipod.

Hey, Sean, where does wallpaper save the image files? I am trying to move them to the camera roll on my touch.
