Day 28: Hum

I cannot believe how popular Wallpaper has been. That was totally unexpected to me! I’m glad you all really like it! You like it so much that my server has been suffering ever since it was released… so if you noticed that the blog here has been a bit slow - that’s why. :)

Today’s app is another sound-based one that came out of my work on Piano. It lets you toy with 10 different frequencies of tones which are mixed together and often end up sounding way too much like 50s/60s-era scifi sound effects. So if you’ve ever needed to generate a weird old-school sound effect like that.. Hum is what you’ve been waiting for. :)

    Great stuff.

It’s useless and silly yet it had me enthralled playing with it! Nice one!

Dude you apps a the BomB! I look forward to every app you put out. How hard is it to make a App to be able to send pics thru text message?

Holy Hell! Nice one Sean! Maybe you can implement some sort of preset manager? Or a way to record out to an audio file? Or maybe some automation?! Wow, so many possibilities. You strike again! Nice work bro.

Hey Sean, I love your apps, and love what you’re doing. Wallpaper is by far my favorite, I just hope after this month you could make an update that enables a Save feature for Wallpaper. Thanks for the free apps, your time is well appreciated!

  6. JJones86 Says:

Your piano app was cool, I haven’t tried this one yet… but I have tried the “beatphone” app created by another guy… I don’t know what the difference is, but the latency on your piano keys is SOOOO much smaller than the latency of the guys beatbox app. I just want a badass DRUM SAMPLER. with 64 interval step sequencer. You have already done half the work with the keys on the piano triggering sounds… now to just make a step sequencer and change the sounds to drums! :D

check out that beatphone .26 app (not the one in installer.app but get it off googlecode) its like 40 megs… maybe you can comment back on why it is so DOG slow compared to your apps.. is it the audio file overhead? the filesize? bit type? 16 bit vs 8 bit? etc etc? or just better programming…

also, i found your source code - you mentioned its in googlecode, i just didn’t understand that the source code was in /trunk/ on the tree.

just played around with the hum.. Actually had iPhone in my universal dock with my stereo on.. I just spent about an hour playing with this app!!
once docked I got super cool stereo sound of course and it made the effects even better to play with!
    nice work! :)

ok so now I just need to find 2more friends so I can start my iPhone band. piano, hum and beatphone woohoo although my advice would be to NOT play through the external speaker the first version of piano blew my speaker some of the tones seem a little beyond what the speaker can handle but oh well shit happens. Also has anyone noticed that if you hold down the a+f notes you get dialtone anyway keep the audio apps coming and great work thanks

  11. ripley Says:

i wish my mac would see the iphone as external audio hardware like a midi keyboard then the piano app could send midi to something like reason via wifi or even better would be if i could use my iphone as a keyboard mouse/trackpad for my PowerBook.
    possible?

  13. sol Says:

dude, how much of a GOD r u?

just simple thanks Sean from me for this fun app not to mention the major bombass app in the Wallpaper!

… since everyone else is adding their two cents, i’ll add mine to someone else’s above relating to a drum machine app!

  14. John Says:

Wow. This app is the best yet. I love all these cool sound ones.

Please do another month. Honestly, your apps are the simplest ones, yet they are the best I’ve yet seen.

It would be cool to see what you could create given more than a couple days to come up with an application. I really hope you consider this. I’d send you cash to see this happen.

  15. Johnny Says:

Any save features of Wallpaper for the iPod Touch? ):

  17. BHSPitMonkey Says:

Kudos on the harmonic series. I do hope you don’t intend to let some of these apps go stale after the month is up.

  18. BigLiquid530 Says:

  19. romero Says:

Hum is great!!! Any plans on adding an EXPORT or SAVE AS… feature?

  21. Ryan Says:

I love this App! I just wish there was a way it could remember my slider settings. After you are done with the other apps, you should come back and add some extra features to this one! Like maybe various other knobs and settings for generating all sorts of interesting tones :)

heheh walking creepily in a hallway with the app blaring is fun!
