So now what?

I finished iApp-a-Day and I’m still alive! Woo! I’m very much happy with myself that I was able to pull this off. :-) My wife also finished her Nanowrimo novel this month, and I’m very proud of her for doing so. We’re both exited we’ve managed to complete such big projects in the same timeframe.

The irony is that after so much coding and looking forward to being done - I’m sitting here feeling a bit lost and without focus. Some of my neural patterns had become so used to the stress of needing to produce an app every day, that those brain cells are desperately looking for something else to stress about so they can feel useful again. :)

Which apps were your favorites, and why? Are there any devs using the code as inspiration or reference or as an example of how NOT to do something? Has the project inspired anyone out there to learn how to become a programmer themselves? Oh.. and what do you think I should do now with all this free time I suddenly have? :-)

i love the wallpaper app! Wife thinks i spend to much time on it but loves me anyways haha. Thanks so much for your hard and valient work! Gave me something to look forward to everyday :) maybe you can make a awsome native game? (if you are looking for a project) Thanks again for your hard work:)

  2. Monty Says:

sean, great job over the last month! I’d have to say that the picture sharing apps were my fav, its cool to see what other ppl around the world r doing. I also liked the idea of keeping stats like u did in the melt app. Maybe update it so it tells us what the lowest time someone melted the ice in. Or may develop a new game with such stats built into it. I wasn’t a big fan of the games like song bird and bonk where there wasn’t really a point to it.
all in all the apps were great especially for doing them in a day, so thanks!

  3. DJ Flav Says:

I first would like to say, thanks for your hard work. I wish it dudnt end so soon! Mabye I can learn to program/code because I gave some great ideas for apps myself. I was really impressed with ghe wallpaper app and also loved Burp! When I didnt know what to eat for lunch or dinner, it gave me some ideas lol.

Good luck on your next project.

  4. Troy Says:

I really enjoy the picture interactive apps you created… a whole new realm! I found myself addicted to Burp, Quest, and Wallpaper! You did a great job this month… and look forward to see what you have in store for us next! Maybe a more interactive photograph game! It was fun to see what other iPhone users were taking pictures of and had as their wallpapers and such. Thanks again!

  5. ripley Says:

I think it would be awesome if you took all the audio apps put them into 1appthan added the ability to record different parts like a logic/ableton live/reason/digital performer type daw or update piano with the ability to assign a different sample to each key or have it display the letter of the note on screen when pressed or an app that allowed me to use vst or audio unit plugins or if you could fix the bluetooth so i could use the iphone as a bluetooth headset for my powerbook then when im at home and got a skype call it would ring my phone that way i wouldnt need to even have skype on the phone or a guitar tuner app similar to 4pockets tuner for wndowsmobile not 1that just played a note but that could use the mic to analyze the signal or an app that would output midi over wifi to a daw or mabey if theres enough range on the proximity sensoryou could develope a theramin that could be played without touching the screen or if i could link2or more iphones over wifi or btooth for multiplayer games or if my phone would function as a mouse trackpad for my powerbook. the best might be a type of boot camp so you could have windows mobile installed on the iPhone these are just a few of my ideas I have many more but don’t know a thing about programming so hopefully you can keep up the awsome work and make me a very happy camper

  6. Unknowncrackfriend Says:

Thanks sean for your hard work you did this month. Also for a up an coming programer you have shown me what people want to have. Thanks for the use of your source codes to look at. To see what can be improved to make it work better plus got me now motived to start my own works. Collage and graffti were some strong apps people wanted.

  7. JBR Says:

How about an app Month, or iAppAWeek?

  8. kmOon Says:

My favs were (are) Collage and Wallpaper
Wallpaper because it’s so easy to get new wallpapers and the fact that the most popular wallpapers also will be displayed the most because many people have them.
Collage because it suddenly allowed iPhone users to communicate freely.
I would like to see a collage-like chat application with the option of posting pictures from camera or from disk.
Something like the first www chat rooms that appeared back in the late 90’s
My daughter is very fond of Piano and my son likes Fall :)
Thanks for a month of anticipation, wonder and childlike happiness.

  9. Aakaash Bali Says:

hey very, very nice job on the I-app-a-day project! I loved the wallpaper sharing app, burp, interval, and shh. I think a very useful app that you can produce is one that allows you to add camera effects, optimize photos, zoom in and out, and other etc functions.

An app such as that will surely be a hit. I would also be able to help construct a GUI. Please check out my deviantart page at silentechodesigns.deviantart.com.

Thanks for the hard work :)

  10. santa Says:

    very nice Sean!

I can tell you, your source code looks nice. I know it’s hard to do a nice code for such a little time, but it’s very readable, and very clever.

What about if you make an app every week?!
    That’s 52 new apps!

    Damn cool idea :D

I made a lot of gfx for you with some ideas, but of course I didn’t send it.
Probably later when you rest a little.

    Well done!

Oh my favorites are Bard and Mixup.
The photoshoot was fun for a couple days, but this two I played every day.

    Thanks again!

  11. coolie Says:

your 2nd paragraph is funny. I just wanted to say thanks for making all of these cool apps for us. I enjoyed them. They were so creative, just to show what the iPhone can do

  12. Sean Says:

I actually started on an app to record periodic pictures from the camera. I was thinking of using it for my last app. What stopped me, though, was that I couldn’t figure out how to turn them into a standalone movie - which meant I’d have to make it so that only my app would be able to play the results. Logically this meant, at least to me, that the app was now less useful and probably needed a social/sharing component. Well, given that all the other photo apps turned into a hotbed for perverts, I decided I didn’t want to make it my last app.

  13. madmax Says:

Thanks for all the apps! Maybe you want to make iApp-a-week or month if you have so much free time? Thank you.

  14. Sean Says:

@madmax: haha… I didn’t have any free time when I started this project, so really… the free time thing is more of a joke than anything. :) We’ll see what life brings… you never know!

  15. jonnyraincloud Says:

in your free time you should…. start iAPPaWEEK!

  16. @$hl3y Says:

hi sean. um, id say i like wallpaper the best :-) :-D. if you don’t mind - how much did u make w/donations and advertising clicks?! if its too personal its ok, i was just curious. outstanding and excellent job! you made it! im very happy for you! take it easy! ill definitely be looking forward to whatever you work on next!

  17. David Says:

I love the idea of air hockey, I think there are some things that could have been done a little better like how it senses the two fingers at once. But that is definitely the most fun app to play with people, and is great when people want to see a reason why I hacked my phone.

I will definitely miss the enjoyment of looking to see what new app there was today, and so will most people around me as they got to play with the apps each day when I saw them during the day.

Hopefully you’ll be able to do some kind of project that involves more apps for the masses. Until then I’ll be waiting to see what you do next. (if you need an idea, just more multi-player things)

  18. Xeroskye Says:

hi Sean, words can’t express how amazing you are for the hard work that you managed to put in this month. Everyday i checked installer app thinking to myself “can he really do a new one everyday?” this guy must be nuts! Lol Very well done Sean!

I think your best ones were burp wallpaper and shh even tho so much profanity is displayed on those the most.

Graffiti would be better if it was more like a chatroom app since its hard to tell what everyone is writing and shh could be better if you could record at 15 seconds

What i was looking forward the most was a picture edit or videolike app that can be shareable. I know this is asking for a lot but thats what i would like to see the most! Please reply me when you have the time. Thanks for everything!

  19. Bobby Says:

    Sean,
I like the wallpaper app, Burp and Quest. I find myself sitting around harvesting wallpaper often! It blows my mind that you could produce the app, respond to requests and modify it to save the wallpaper right away.

I have had my iPhone for a few months, and got one for my wife and daughter. For all three of us, this month has been the best experience with the phone - looking forward to each day’s app. It was a pleasure to donate early in the month!

I hope to see new stuff from you, and I am relieved (like you probably are) that you can spend more time on particular applications that will stand above the rest!

  20. tammy Says:

Sean thanks for working so hard every day. My husband.got me an iPhone that I wasn’t sure I really wanted. I looked forward to your new application every day. I had a lot of fun with burp, quest, and Manu others. By the way, I do like my iPhone and can’t imagine not having it now.

  21. Zcott Says:

Thanks for all the hard work you put in so that us mere users could have a new toy to play with each day. It’s really appreciated. :-)

I particularly enjoyed the Meal one and the Wallpaper one….great ideas! But I kept the Piano app installed because I’m a piano player.

Hope to see your now-dormant brain cells back in action at coding some killer iPhone apps!

  22. Lebanon Says:

Thank you again and again and again… You brought a smile to milions of people everyday in November.
One request though. It would be great if you could group apps together by theme in one super application.
    For instance:
The networking apps, the musical apps, the games, the gadgets etc….
This way we could save up on main screen estate :) One would only have 4 icons instead of the 15+ appdays I currently have on my iphone.
I LOVE most of the apps you made. Very creative work indeed.
    Congratulations for your wife too.
    What a motivated couple!

  23. Ou812ic Says:

  25. braxton Says:

iapp-a-week definately, or start an emulator project, you know what else? Maybe a sort of desktop app. Either way don’t fade away from the community of iphone applications.

  26. Mogley Smooches Says:

Great work, i cant imagine how you did it all. I really liked the graffiti and wallpaper. Is it hard to make them? I kinda wanna learn how now.

  27. Nico Says:

thank you very much, hope you come back with more apps after a rest

  28. A Says:

Thank you for an exciting and fun month! Everyday when I wake up, I check for your apps, and am always impressed! PLEASE continue to work on more iPhone/iPod Touch apps, or something related, you have real talent!!!

    A Few Ideas:

    1. Make an easy-to-use desktop app that allows basic/intermediate users to make their own iPhone/iPod Touch apps with minimal coding

    2. Make more games for iPhone

    3. Make more community/social based apps (and maybe get some more bandwith while you’re at it ;-) )

    4. iApp-a-Day November 2008 (And you’ll have the SDK too, plus a MUCH wider audience, as their iPhones/iPod Touches won’t have to be jailbroken)

Just a few ideas but that first (and fourth!!) ones would be really cool!!!!
    **runs off to learn Cocoa**

Thanks again for an AWESOME month!!

    -A

  29. BigLiquid530 Says:

Hey Sean thanks for all the apps. I personally like them all. I kinda like the dancing Turkey, was kinda funny. As you can tell everyone appreciates your hard work. I really hope you decide to make some more apps one day. Until next install thanks dude…..

  30. curious Says:

I would have to say my favorites are:
    1. Wallpaper
There really is no better way to spend time on the toilet then to evaluate wallpapers :). Seriously a wonderful app!

    2. Burp and Quest are tied for second

    3. 5-way level is third.

Your social applications for the iphone are currently second to none. If your looking for something to do, have you thought about creating an iphone specific social site? You already have an active customer base, and your getting content added all the time. If you could find a way to uniquely identify each phone, you could filter out content from people who abuse the system.

  31. alan Says:

it was so much fun waiting each day for another new app, I just wanted to thank you and I hope someday in the near future I open installer and see a new app from you… again, thank you and the app I enjoyed the most, like almost everyone is wallpaper… I also agree on the idea of a chat client… an app like graffiti but with the ability of login in and having your own username and stuff… hope to hear from you soon :)

  32. bob Says:

my prefered were all thw cock apps

  33. Anabella Says:

Thanks! I will miss the daily app, I am totally addictec to BURP :)

  34. theresa Says:

just a note to tell you how much I appreciate all your hard work!! I miss my appaday, it gave me something to look forward to. By far, my favorite is quest, we have had a ball with it!! Im a bartender and i entertain the drunks with it…. Maybe an appaweek? Please? Dont just leave us!

  35. ReTurner Says:

    Hello Sean!
im glad you finished your project as u wanted to, not many people are able to make such amount of deadlines (every day) in one mount! and each day u brought us a wonderful app.
I think Whisper was the most creative and funny app.
Hockey was the coolest although it needs some upgrades (like making the screen bigger hehe XD)
and Collage was the most enjoyable as u get respond to what u post in the same time.

I hope you enjoyed this project as me and my friend did- and i wonder if you will work on a Super-App u will release in the future, because if this is what u make in 1 day- i want to see what u will make in 20 days! (ofcource u will need some rest).

even if only 50 people making posts in the blog- i know that thousands of people enjoyed the apps all over the world.

if you will even need any help in your apps (testing and such) or in anything else, contact me in my email.

  36. Xander Says:

I can’t thank you enough for last month. I have kept 11 apps on my phone to use. Wallpaper was my favorite but i liked Hockey because it was two player. I think what would be useful to me would bea business app that is kindof like a workorder. Something that tracked when i left the office, when i arrived onsite, space to type what i did while i was there, time departed, time back at office. Then a button to send that info in an email. If i knew how to code, that is what i would make.

Anyway, thanks again, hope you enjoy the holidays

  37. y@h00w!z4rd Says:

You’re the best Sean, every morning I always checked the Installer.app to see what app you had in store for us today. How do u make them though, any programs or tuturials?

  38. rockgyeon Says:

you’re the good man to share your minds to us, and bring it to iPhone.
Good luck to you and your family.
sorry for my poor english, i am chinese.

  39. rockgyeon Says:

    a suggest to you :
“whisper” maybe better if you make it like a voice twitter app.
i think that could be a amazing.

  40. chris Says:

great job. now you should do iAppaDay for december, except with updates for each of these amazing apps

  41. Chill23 Says:

I already posted my homage-to-Sean on DAY 30, so I’ll keep this one idea-related. Like many others have said, we’d love (need) to see more of your work; weekly would be great. I also agree with A, that once outside dev is unlocked, your work will be much more widely seen, thereby necessitating another app-a-day marathon… jk(mostly..) @Bobby- the app-a-day was definitely my best experience with the device thus far, and Sean’s quick fixes made it all the better. @David- I also enjoyed hockey immensely and would appreciate a tweak lessening the importance of the two-finger rule. @Ripley- please punctuate, eyes all over the world have bled on your account. @Troy- the interactive apps ARE the best because they involve the community. @Xeroskype- I’ve also pondered the poss of a youtube-like iapp; it would likely be hugely popular, especially if stored vid files could be exchanged and/or iPhone-recorded videos shared. @Lebanon- use the “old” customize app to gain access to rbst, which allows you to hide infrequently used apps. @Bob- I’m shocked you’re French(NOT!). @Returner- seeing what Sean can do with more than 24hrs would be HUGE, given his abilities with far less time and far more stress.

Sean, it’d be great if you could port this forum to an app. Favorites: 1 Wallpaper 2 Burp 3 Quest 4 Whisper 5 Graffiti

  42. SeanNeedsToDoThis Says:

    Sean
Now with all your free time
you need to masturbate or fuck your wife.
She probably likes when you make her swallow.

  43. andy Says:

    !
An easy one I know I would use would be a simple PHONEBOOK app. I hate going to safari to google a busness , or even worse, 411.

  44. zurie Says:

I’d love to see a photo app where you could manipulate ALL your photos in a roll at the same time, sorta like the TED 2006 demo where HAN was flipping a roll of photos around, resizing 1, rotating another, zooming in to a 3rd, etc.. that would be cool… or the LAVA lamp app also featured in that demo! :D

  45. A Says:

    @SeanNeedsToDoThis:
Now we know where the nude photos in Burp came from :D!

  46. Xadacka Says:

Dude you are the KING of iPhone apps!

Very nice work here, im gonna miss the fun of something new every day:(

Lol if ya do have time, i hope youll make some new fun stuff. Some sort of iPhone chatroom thingy would be cool….

    ;)

  47. alexwilliams Says:

thanks for the apps! You are really good at making cool stuff. I love wallpaper! Mabecould you make an app that let’s you make a wall paper from a pic in safari? Or if there is one could someone tell me about it and how to get it?? Thanks for your hard work and god bless everyone.

Doubleagent0003@yahoo.com is my email if anyone knows about the safari app:)

  48. Xander Says:

@alexailliams - the screenshot app will do that. Zoom into whatever you want and you can capture it.

  49. Kev Munro Says:

Why not consolidate all of your apps into one big app? Like a launcher but more intuitive?

  50. Kev Munro Says:

You could call it ‘NovAPP’ - The definitive month of Apps by Sean

  51. CrownOfThornz Says:

Sean, could you throw a link to my blog on your sidebar. You don’t realize how much I would appreciate it. I will do the same for your blog.

  53. Ryan Says:

Although I didn’t try all the apps, I think my favorites were Hum, Piano, Whisper, Hockey, and Pumped. BTW, I noticed a bug in Hockey: You have to place two fingers on the iPhone in order to start a game, but it doesn’t register the finger-touch unless your finger is NOT on the paddle. This is frustrating since that’s the most natural place to put your finger when starting a game. Also, I would love to see updates to the Hum and Piano programs to make them more full-featured.

  54. Ben Fischl Says:

You did a great job Sean - I cant wait to see what else you make for us in the future but for now I think they best thing for you to do right now would be to make improvements on your most popular apps. My suggestion is that you tie all the social (and a few game) apps together under one service called the iPhone Network. Let me outline it for you.

I would start by creating just one new app: the iPhone Network Manager. For the INM app you create you account and build a profile by uploading a photo from your camera roll and including contact info or a quote or creed. You create a login name and password. Now what? Add the social and stat tracking features to the best ape and displaythe statistics on users IN profile. Here are a few examples.

Wallpaper: Let users upload multiple files (the file to be uploaded currently must be the current user background) and let people dial in their IN friends names to seetheir entire list of uploaded wallpapers. Shoe statistics like how many people have downloaded user “x”’s wallpapers etc. Allow users to access a portal to view the most popular wallpapers this week/month/all time. Of course keep the random cycle mode too.

Graffitti Chat: Users can log in or remain annonymous and join walls. Pet users see what wall your friends are participating in.

Piano: Let users record and share songs with iPhone network friends.

Burp: Let users rank meals on a ten point scale. Let users designate their meal plans and post them to their IN profiles.

Sleigh: Let users compare how long they kept Santa alive. Global leaderboards!

Quest: Make multi paet quests that require the participation of multi-user parties! Let users reviewe archives of completed quests. Allow users to post a “service record” of all quests participated in on their IN profiles.

Of course you would log in to each app to utilize the iPhone Network features.

I’ve got plenty of ideas like thst and ai would absolutely love it if you could do ajything remotlry similar to what I described. :D

  55. yo mtv raps Says:

you know what would be AWESOME? ilightbright! haha i would play for hours…maybe im lame………………..

  56. warren Says:

Sean, your source code definitly made the difference in my own project. I’m a Windows refugee struggling with a new computer, OS, IDE, toolchain, language, and scattered docs. You work turned the tide, so I can’t thank you enough!

Ideas … Hmmm, well how about iAppAnHour? Sound crazy? Not if we make it easy for non-progammers to write their own app. Perhaps in Cow++ ;-)

  57. BHSPitMonkey Says:

I wish you would polish and develop some of the more promising of your apps, like Mixup (could become a super-fun Text Twist clone) and the musical toys.

  58. Jules Says:

I’d say concentrate on making Wallpaper better. More options, transitions, functionality, etc. You should open it up to let people share their photo library!

  59. yo mtv raps Says:

    @Jules
i think it would be awesome if it was a complete file sharing system. can you image sharing movies, music, pics and info? it would bring down itunes!

  60. alixky Says:

I love your apps so much that I want to be a iphone dev. I have some basic programing background in windows but not any with iphone or mac. If you can share some of your app code or point a direction to go, that would be great. Why don’t you open a forum/learing site and use your app-a-day as examples for inspired people who want to become coder learn and share knowledge. Thanks again for your hard work.

  61. carlos Says:

shh! Whisper is the best. LOL you’d be surprised the funny stuff whispered everynight! Thanks for your hard work. Because of you this phone has been so much more entertaining.

  62. Chris Says:

I’d say you should workon some new apps without time constraints. I liked drum. How do you write the apps.
