Out of the hospital
Well I just got out of the hospital. About 24 hours ago I went into the ER for one of the most painful headaches I’ve had since the time I had meningitis about 14 years ago or so. After testing everything they could think of, they never could determine what it was. I was swabbed and poked everywhere. I had not one - but TWO lumbar punctures because the ER doc messed up (and radiology went in using a cool live X-Ray scanner machine so they could see exactly what they were doing - even so, the process was excruciating). I had chest X-Rays and even a CT scan. Everything was negative or normal, though. It wasn’t the flu, strep, meningitis, mono, or anything bacterial. In the end, they decided it was just some kind of mystery viral infection - and there’s not a lot to be done about that except let the body do its thing and pump me full of pain meds in the meantime. So I stayed over night getting fed a constant stream of saline solution with the occasional shot of morphine until early this morning when a nurse decided to try Ibuprofen instead of Acetaminophen to break the fever - which worked like a charm. After that, my improvement was so significant that they decided I probably wouldn’t die after all and could go home. Although since I had also complained about my ears, they did a little poking around in there and discovered that both ears had become infected recently. *sigh*
It’s been a long and very tiring couple of days. I can’t wait to sleep for real tonight!
