Bathroom Remodel
It feels like I haven’t had time to blog in years - and it’s no different now, sadly. Between Amos and work, I’ve been pretty much all busy. Of course that wasn’t good enough - so we decided to also start the bathroom remodel we’ve been wanting to do since we moved into the house. That project consumed our entire weekend (starting last friday afternoon) and it’s nowhere near done.
I’m tired, broken, and our house is filled with dust and grime. I really don’t like the process. In fact, I’ll just come out and say it: I hate it. I like things that just work. And, contrary to what some people may think, I actually like things clean. (I just don’t like doing the cleaning…) I like it when stuff plugs in, things line up properly, and everything comes in LEGO-like interlocking components. I like it when a plan comes together - and it’s a simple, easy, nice-looking plan. Remodeling is the opposite of all of that - and doubly so in an 80+ year old house made of what I can only assume was river drift wood, cheap plaster, and a prayer. (Wall insulation was apparently too much hassle when they built this place, because even though 2 of the 4 bathroom walls are external walls, there was hardly anything there to keep the heat in. That explains some things about the rest of the house…)
I’ve taken a few pictures and I came across two that were shot from a very similar angle at different times, so I thought it might be fun to post them. As you can see in the before shot, the bathroom wasn’t just begging for a remodel - it was actually telling the world with one of those airplanes that fly around trailing a huge banner that read, “Hey, I seriously need to be gutted, here!” In the next shot, you’re looking at where the tub used to be - but after the walls had been reinforced with new studs in places, significant amounts of insulation stuffed in, and some cement board put up for the coming wall tile. Ironically, I think it looks better now than it did when it was a functional bathroom…
