Piano

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

I’ve just updated Piano with a full octave now! The keys are smaller, which might slightly affect playability, but the whole thing feels more complete now. :) So go play some songs, upload a vid to YouTube or something, and post the link! (I can’t play anything - so I’m relying on you all to show me what can be done with it!)

Day 29: Bonk

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

This is another one that might be most interesting to kids. Little balls bounce around the screen and make noise when they bump into each other or the wall.

It’s getting close to the end… I’m still not sure what I’m going to make for tomorrow, but I don’t have long to make up my mind. :)

Bits And Bytes

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

It’s been awhile since I’ve written a statistics update about iApp-a-Day. Time to change that!

The first bandwidth intensive app was Burp. On the day it was released, my server transfered 24,334,858KB of data - that’s over 23GB! The day before Burp was released, there was a teeny 2,510,021KB of data transfered. I remember my hosting provider being more than a little surprised at the spike that day… :)

Everyday since Burp, the server has transfered around 10GB or more per day - until Quest was released on the 10th. Traffic surged to again to around 24GB that day and then dropped off to a similar 10GB per day average (or so). There were little spikes here and there with the release of other social apps, but none made near so great an impact until Wallpaper.

Yesterday the traffic exploded off the chart with a whopping 68,449,745KB in one day. That’s about 65GB, folks! Almost 3 times more intense than the day Quest was released! The scary thing is that today is only half over… and so far today the server has transfered more than 52,827,970KB or 50GB. This is the first time that traffic has gone up the day after a new social app was released!

The kicker is that all of this traffic is being served up by a single, old 2.8Ghz P4 server that also runs this blog and a ton of other little sites. :-) So it’s straining a bit serving up the 41,205,825 hits I’ve had this month so far…

Day 28: Hum

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

I cannot believe how popular Wallpaper has been. That was totally unexpected to me! I’m glad you all really like it! You like it so much that my server has been suffering ever since it was released… so if you noticed that the blog here has been a bit slow - that’s why. :)

Today’s app is another sound-based one that came out of my work on Piano. It lets you toy with 10 different frequencies of tones which are mixed together and often end up sounding way too much like 50s/60s-era scifi sound effects. So if you’ve ever needed to generate a weird old-school sound effect like that.. Hum is what you’ve been waiting for. :)
